Xinzhe Zhu et al.

Summary: Data mining and machine learning have been applied to study the effects of microscopic material properties of Fe-BC on Cr(VI) removal in water, revealing that direct impacts of impregnated iron on Cr(VI) removal may be limited, while altering biochar properties indirectly affects the removal process. The study's machine learning models consider surface functionalities of BC and Fe-BC to offer more accurate predictions for Cr(VI) removal, providing important insights for the design of engineered biochar for environmental remediation.

In situ remediation of Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater by ZVI-PRB and the corresponding indigenous microbial community responses: a field-scale study

Qing Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) successfully reduced hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) concentrations through chemical reduction, impacting the indigenous microbial community structure. Competitive growth among Cr(VI)-reducing bacteria was observed in the PRB area, while Cr(VI)-reducing bacteria were enriched downgradient, indicating further bio-reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). This bio-reduction could serve as a secondary mechanism for prolonged removal of Cr(VI) from groundwater, influenced by environmental factors such as pH, dissolved oxygen, Cr(VI) levels, oxidation-reduction potential, and temperature.

Melamine induces reproductive dysfunction via down-regulated the phosphorylation of p38 and downstream transcription factors Max and Sap1a in mice testes

Shuming Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that low-dose melamine exposure reduces sperm quality, alters testicular histological structure, and decreases the mRNA expression levels of specific genes such as p38, ERK1/2, MAX, and Sap1a. Analysis of p38 and phosphorylated p38 suggests that the downregulated phosphorylation of p38 and downstream transcription factors MAX and Sap1a play crucial roles in male reproductive dysfunction caused by melamine.

Microscopic mechanism about the selective adsorption of Cr(VI) from salt solution on O-rich and N-rich biochars

Nan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the selective adsorption of Cr(VI) on O-rich and N-rich biochars under strong competition of anions using spectroscopic and molecular simulation approaches. It was found that O-rich biochars promoted Cr(VI) removal through surface complexation and strong H-bonds, while N-rich biochars were suppressed by coexisting anions due to weaker H-bonds. This study provides a novel approach for evaluating the roles of biochar functional groups in the removal of Cr(VI) from complex environmental systems at a quantitative, molecular level.
