Bridging the Charge Accumulation and High Reaction Order for High-Rate Oxygen Evolution and Long Stable Zn-Air Batteries

Yawen Dai et al.

Summary: Combining noble metals with nonnoble metals is an attractive strategy to balance the activity and cost of electrocatalysts. In this study, Ir@Co3O4 as a platform electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) was thoroughly investigated. The pseudocapacitive feature of Co3O4 and the high reaction order of Ir sites synergistically contribute to the boosted OER activity of Ir@Co3O4. Additionally, the application of Ir@Co3O4 in Zn-air batteries improves the charging potential and cycle stability. This work provides clear guidance for boosting the utilization of noble metals in electrocatalysis.

Ordered macroporous design of sacrificial Co/VN nano-heterojunction as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst for rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Ximeng Zhao et al.

Summary: In this research, a bifunctional catalyst consisting of Co/VN heterojunction supported by N-doped carbon with a three-dimensionally ordered macroporous structure was fabricated. The Co/VN@NC catalyst exhibited good activity and stability in both ORR and OER reactions. The VN sacrificial promoter facilitated the oxidization and self-reconstruction of Co into Co3O4 and CoOOH during the OER process, while the Co-decorated N-doped carbon acted as the active species for the ORR reaction. The study provides a new strategy for the development of efficient and durable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts.

Understanding the Surface Reconstruction on Ternary WxCoBx for Water Oxidation and Zinc-Air Battery Applications

Ali Saad et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis of various metal borides and their surface reconstruction under electrochemical activation. It is found that cyclic voltammetric activation enhances the activity of CoB and W2CoB2, while WB and WCoB remain stable. The surface reconstruction of W2CoB2 is more rapid and results in a larger active surface area compared to CoB. Additionally, the metallic W2CoB2 core displays better oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance than CoB. Therefore, W2CoB2 exhibits superior OER performance compared to CoB, WB, and WCoB. The mixture of W2CoB2 with Pt/C as catalysts in the air electrode of a rechargeable Zn-air battery also exhibits better performance than the IrO2-Pt/C couple-based Zn-air battery.

Co3O4/Mn3O4 hybrid catalysts with heterointerfaces as bifunctional catalysts for Zn-air batteries

Qikai Huang et al.

Summary: A Co3O4/Mn3O4 nanohybrid with heterointerfaces is designed as an advanced cathode catalyst for Zinc-air batteries (ZABs), which shows high activity and durability in oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction. The improved catalytic activity is attributed to the heterointerfaces between Co3O4 and Mn3O4 as well as the improved conductivity and contact area of the three-phase interface. The home-made ZAB based on Co3O4/Mn3O4/rGO exhibits high open circuit voltage, large power density, and good long-term cycling stability, making it a promising bifunctional oxygen catalyst for rechargeable ZABs.
