General Suspended Printing Strategy toward Programmatically Spatial Kevlar Aerogels

Qingqing Cheng et al.

Summary: A universal microgel-directed suspended printing (MSP) strategy has been developed for fabricating various mesoporous aerogels with spatially stereoscopic structures, demonstrating excellent printability and programmability under high-speed printing mode. Custom-tailored aerogels with superior thermal properties have been successfully fabricated, showing excellent discharge capacity even under harsh environments. This strategy proposes an alternative for developing customized aerogels and inspires the creation of truly arbitrary architectures for wider applications.

Flexible and shape-configurable PI composite aerogel films with tunable dielectric properties

Omid Aghababaei Tafreshi et al.

Summary: This study presents the fabrication of novel polyimide composite aerogel films with tunable dielectric properties by incorporating graphene nanoplatelet fillers. The addition of graphene improved the nanostructure of aerogels, resulting in improved homogeneity and uniformity of the composite gel films. The inclusion of graphene nanoplatelets proved to be an effective strategy for improving the mechanical properties, machinability, and thermal stability of aerogels.

Influence of Silica-Aerogel on Mechanical Characteristics of Polyurethane-Based Composites: Thermal Conductivity and Strength

Jeong-Hyeon Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, PUFs were synthesized with various weight percentages of porous silica aerogel to enhance the characteristics of PUF used in LNG carrier insulation systems. The addition of 1 wt.% silica aerogel significantly improved the mechanical and thermal properties. However, increasing the silica aerogel content to 3 wt.% and 5 wt.% reduced the mechanical properties due to pores generated on the surface of the composites.

Summary: Aerogels are highly porous structures produced by replacing the liquid solvent of a gel with air, without causing a collapse in the solid network. Additive manufacturing (AM) has been used to fabricate 3D aerogels with customized geometries specific to their applications, showing great promise in various fields such as tissue engineering, electrochemical energy storage, controlled drug delivery, sensing, and soft robotics. Postprinting processes are addressed to achieve desired properties like porosity and mechanical strength through drying and postdrying treatments.
