Summary: In this study, a bifunctional catalyst for CO2RR and ORR reactions in aqueous Zn-air batteries (ZAB) was developed. The catalyst, consisting of atomically dispersed niobium anchored onto N-doped ordered mesoporous carbon (Nb-N-C), exhibited high activity for CO2RR, ORR, and ZAB, thanks to the high Nb atom-utilization efficiency and ordered mesoporous structure. Furthermore, the self-powered CO2 electrolysis system showed promising performance with continuous CO2 conversion.

Summary: This study focuses on the magnetic transition of LaFe0.5Co0.5O3 and reports the low temperature sol-gel synthesis of pure and Bi-doped La1-xBixFe0.5Co0.5O3 perovskites. The samples were characterized and it was found that Bi doping resulted in structural transition and improved grain growth and crystallinity. Magnetization measurements showed weak ferromagnetic nature of La1-xBixFe0.5Co0.5O3, which could be attributed to the canted anti ferromagnetic structure and the interaction between Fe3+ ions. The increase in magnetic transition and the lower magnetic moment with an increase in Bi content were explained by the weakening of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction caused by structural modification and lattice distortion associated with Bi3+ ions.

Summary: Emerging Fe-P-C structure, specifically Fe-P nanocrystals anchored in N-doped carbon polyhedrons (Fe-P@NCPs), has shown great potential for electrochemical catalysis in both CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and Zn-CO2 batteries (ZCBs). These bifunctional electrocatalysts are synthesized through a simple strategy using self-templated zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) and high-temperature calcination. The resulting Fe-P@NCPs exhibit comparable CO2RR activity to the best-reported Fe-N-C structures, with a CO Faradaic efficiency of up to 95% at -0.55 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). When used as cathode materials in ZCBs, the Fe-P@NCPs demonstrate peak power density of 0.85 mW cm(-2), energy density of 231.8 Wh kg(-1), cycling durability over 500 cycles, and outstanding stability in discharge voltage for 7 days. The presence of highly catalytic Fe-P nanocrystals in N-doped carbon matrix contributes to the high selectivity and efficiency of the battery by increasing catalytically active sites and improving interfacial charge-transfer conductivity for enhanced CO2RR activity.

Summary: Designing highly active and stable electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for energy conversion and storage technology. In this study, a S and N co-doped graphene-supported cobalt-nickel sulfide composite catalyst was synthesized through a one-step hydrothermal method, showing excellent bifunctional catalytic performance under alkaline conditions. The good hydrophilicity of rGO@SN, the pure bimetallic structure, and the chemical coupling/interaction between CoNi2S4 and rGO@SN are believed to contribute to the enhanced HER and OER catalytic activities.

Summary: Proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis is a promising technology for green hydrogen production, but the slow reaction kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an acidic environment hinders its practical viability. Noble metal-based catalysts like iridium and ruthenium are effective for the acidic OER, but their low abundance and high cost pose challenges for their use in PEM electrolyzers. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a platform for designing efficient and cost-effective acidic OER catalysts, with promising future research directions towards better catalysts for operation in acidic environments and PEM devices.
