The missing MIL-101(Mn): geometrically guided synthesis and topologically correlated valence states

Yonghong Xiao et al.

Summary: Mixed-valence manganese complexes are of interest in biocatalysis and magnetism research. However, incorporating manganese clusters into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) often faces challenges such as valence control and phase selectivity. In this study, a unique geometrically guided approach was used to successfully synthesize the long-sought MIL-101(Mn), and its single-crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction. The research revealed the emergent phenomenon of topologically correlated mixed-valence states and enzymatic catalytic activity of the metastable Mn(iii) species in MIL-101(Mn).

Building a Pyrazole-Benzothiadiazole-Pyrazole Photosensitizer into Metal-Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Aerobic Oxidation

Ji-Kang Jin et al.

Summary: Charge separation is crucial in regulating photochemical properties in photocatalysts design. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising candidates for heterogeneous photocatalysis due to their designability and photon absorption tunability. A pyrazole-benzothiadiazole-pyrazole organic molecule with a donor-acceptor-donor conjugated pi-system was designed for fast charge separation, resulting in a more effective heterogeneous photocatalyst JNU-204, which demonstrated stability and reusability in aerobic oxidation reactions under visible-light irradiation. JNU-204 also showed applications in the synthesis of marine natural product core skeletons.

25 Years of Reticular Chemistry

Ralph Freund et al.

Summary: The core of reticular chemistry has brought precision and expertise of organic and inorganic synthesis to the solid state. The most profound scientific innovation of this field has been the design strategies for the synthesis of extended crystalline solids through strong directional bonds, highlighting the different classes of reticular materials developed and how complexity can be introduced into their backbones. Structural control over these materials is being extended from the molecular scale to their crystal morphology and shape on the nanoscale, all the way to their shaping on the bulk scale.

Post-synthetic modifications (PSM) on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for visible-light-initiated photocatalysis

Yuhuan Qin et al.

Summary: Utilizing solar energy through photocatalysis is a promising strategy for addressing energy shortages and environmental issues. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as a new type of photocatalytic material, with post-synthetic modifications (PSM) being a powerful strategy for fabricating photoactive MOFs based on existing MOFs. Various PSM strategies, including coordination on unsaturated metal sites, metalation on open coordinated sites, and ligand exchange, have been summarized for the development of photoactive MOFs.

Photoredox/cobaloxime co-catalyzed allylation of amines and sulfonyl hydrazines with olefins to access α-allylic amines and allylic sulfones

Hui Xu et al.

Summary: A dual-catalytic platform combining photoredox catalysis and cobaloxime catalysis was reported for the allylation of amines and sulfonyl hydrazines with olefins to selectively access alpha-allylic amines and allylic sulfones in good yields. The strategy avoided the use of a stoichiometric amount of terminal oxidant and pre-functionalized allylic precursors, presenting a green and ideal atom- & step-economical process. Mechanistic studies suggested the involvement of a radical process in this reaction.
