Effect of milled and lithography-based additively manufactured zirconia (3Y-TZP) on the biological properties of human osteoblasts

Francisco Javier Rodriguez-Lozano et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of milled and lithography-based AM zirconia on the biological properties of human osteoblasts, as well as to compare their chemical composition differences. The results showed that both types of zirconia had similar cytocompatibility with human osteoblasts, but there were slight differences in their chemical composition.

The Flexural Strength and Flexural Modulus of Stereolithography Additively Manufactured Zirconia with Different Porosities

Amirali Zandinejad et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the mechanical properties of stereolithography (SLA) additive manufactured zirconia with different porosities. The results showed that zirconia with 0% porosity exhibited significantly higher flexural strength and flexural modulus. Zirconia with different porosities demonstrated varied mechanical properties.

Human Gingival Fibroblast and Osteoblast Behavior on Groove-Milled Zirconia Implant Surfaces

Mariana Brito da Cruz et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the response of periodontal hard tissue and soft tissue cells to microgroove-milled zirconia surfaces. The results showed that the milled microgroove texture did not affect the viability of gingival and bone cells, but it seemed to influence the cellular differentiation of osteoblasts.

Surface Structure of Zirconia Implants: An Integrative Review Comparing Clinical Results with Preclinical and In Vitro Data

Nadja Rohr et al.

Summary: This review analyzed and correlated the findings of zirconia implants in clinical, preclinical, and in vitro cell studies in relation to surface structure. The results showed no correlation between surface structure and the observed effects in all three study types. Micro-structured surfaces showed lower mean bone loss in clinical studies, while smooth surfaces enhanced cell spreading and cytoskeletal formation in cell studies. Standardized procedures for human, animal, and in vitro studies are needed to further examine the results.

Strength and reliability of zirconia fabricated by additive manufacturing technology

Andreas Zenthoefer et al.

Summary: This study aimed to test the strength and reliability of 3D printed zirconia compared to milled zirconia. The results showed that although 3D printed zirconia had higher average strength values, its reliability was inferior to milled zirconia. It is notable that even after color infiltration in a partially sintered state, the tested 3D printed zirconia still exceeded the ISO flexural strength criteria, indicating its high potential for clinical use.

Federico Mandelli et al.

Summary: This case series evaluated the clinical and histological performance of customized-3D zirconia barriers in guided bone regeneration (GBR) procedures, showing successful outcomes in terms of bone regeneration and implantation outcomes without the need for additional bone augmentation. Further research with a larger sample size is needed to confirm the effectiveness of these barriers as an alternative to traditional membranes and meshes.

Additively Manufactured Zirconia for Dental Applications

Hiroto Nakai et al.

Summary: The study compared the crystallography, microstructure, and flexural strength of zirconia ceramics manufactured by stereolithography and subtractive methods. The additively manufactured zirconia showed similar characteristics to the subtractively manufactured zirconia, indicating it could be a good option for dental implants.
