Helium ion irradiation effects on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of silicon oxycarbide

Sanjay Kumar Devendhar Singh et al.

Summary: In this study, silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) was prepared by pyrolysis of a polysiloxane precursor at different temperatures and evaluated as a new nuclear fuel coating material. The findings show that the sample pyrolyzed at 1500 degrees C exhibits amorphization of crystalline phases after He ion irradiation, suggesting potential applications as irradiation-tolerant fuels for advanced nuclear reactors.

Phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of polymer-derived SiOC glass-ceramics reinforced by WC particles

Jiongjie Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a WC-containing SiOC glass-ceramic was synthesized via pyrolysis and SPS. The sintering behavior, phase composition, and microstructure of the ceramics were investigated. The results showed that increasing the sintering temperature enhanced the densification of the ceramics and reduced the disorder of free carbon in SiOC. Furthermore, the incorporation of WC particles effectively improved the mechanical properties of the ceramics.

Mechanical behaviour of polymer derived ceramics - a review

Ravindran Sujith et al.

Summary: Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) have been used and explored for various applications over the past five decades. The transition from a precursor to an inorganic ceramic by pyrolysis and heat-treatment results in amorphous or nanocrystalline composites, with phases controlled by processing conditions. Understanding the mechanical behavior of PDCs is crucial for long-term use, but quantitative estimation of properties is challenging due to unique structure governed by precursor chemistry. Different forms of PDCs exhibit varied mechanical behavior, which can be studied through experimental and simulation-based approaches. Additive manufacturing processes have recently been used for fabricating PDCs, with their mechanical properties also being included in this review.

Further insights into the electrical and thermal properties of carbon enriched silicon oxycarbide composites

M. A. Mazo et al.

Summary: In this study, cheap, abundant, and easily-obtained carbon fillers such as graphite and carbon black were successfully incorporated into a silicon oxycarbide matrix to obtain dense crack-free bulk composites with enhanced electrical and thermal conductivities. Raman parameters were crucial for understanding the electronic and/or phonon transport in the composites.

Summary: The study demonstrates that dense materials like SiOCd and SiOC-SiCd perform well in thermal shock tests by forming a protective silica layer to mitigate damage. In contrast, porous materials like SiOCNp and SiOCp failed the thermal shock tests as they resulted in large depressions.
