Enhancement mechanical properties of in-situ preparated B4C-based composites with small amount of (Ti3SiC2+Si)

Yingying Liu et al.

Summary: B4C-based composites were synthesized by spark plasma sintering and the effects of sintering temperature and second phase content on mechanical performance and microstructure were studied. The study found that high-density composites can be obtained at a low sintering temperature, and the composite with 10 wt% (TiB2+SiC) showed excellent mechanical properties.

Ultra-low temperature spark plasma sintering of super wear-resistant hard B4C composites

Victor Zamora et al.

Summary: The feasibility of fabricating super wear-resistant hard B4C composites was investigated using spark plasma sintering at an ultra-low temperature with high proportions of MoSi2 aids. The study found that the addition of 40% MoSi2 aids could achieve the ultrafast full densification of B4C at 1400 degrees C, resulting in hard and super wear-resistant composites with a quadruplex-particulate, fine-grained, fully-dense microstructure. This work opens up new possibilities for the low-cost fabrication of novel B4C composites for contact-mechanical and tribological applications.

Microstructure and mechanical behaviour of transient liquid phase spark plasma sintered B4C-SiC-TiB2 composites from a B4C-TiSi2 system

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: Fully-dense B4C-SiC-TiB2 composites with high strength and toughness were successfully prepared through in-situ reactive spark plasma sintering using B4C and TiSi2 as raw materials. TiSi2 was confirmed as a reactive sintering additive that promoted densification, while SiC-TiB2 agglomerates played a critical role in improving toughness in the composite material.

Transient liquid-phase assisted spark-plasma sintering and dry sliding wear of B4C ceramics fabricated from B4C nanopowders

Cristina Ojalvo et al.

Summary: An ultrafine-grained B4C composite with superior wear resistance was developed through fabrication, microstructural characterization, and mechanical and tribological testing. The study optimized the preparation process, identified the optimal sintering parameters, investigated the wear behavior, and compared it with a reference fine-grained B4C composite, demonstrating the potential for fabricating B4C tribocomponents with greater superior wear resistance.
