Water absorption behavior of hydrophobized concrete using silane emulsion as admixture

Chaoyang Zhang et al.

Summary: The influences of silane emulsion as a hydrophobic agent on the pore structure, compressive strength, and water absorption behavior of hardened cement paste were studied. The results showed that silane slightly inhibited cement hydration and reduced the compressive strength of concrete. However, silane significantly decreased the water sorptivity of concrete due to the hydrophobization of capillary walls in hardened cement paste.

Microstructure and macro properties of sustainable alkali-activated fly ash mortar with various construction waste fines as binder replacement up to 100%

Miao Liu et al.

Summary: Utilizing construction waste fines as an eco-friendly binder for sustainable alkali-activated materials provides a new approach for recycling construction waste. This study investigated the effects of different types and replacement levels of construction waste fines on the properties of alkali-activated fly ash mortar (AAM). The results showed that incorporating waste paste powder containing hydrated products improved the pore structure of AAM, while incorporating waste mortar powder or waste concrete powder with inert quartz and calcite had a negative impact on the alkali-activated reaction and pore structure of AAM. Adjusting the type and replacement level of construction waste fines can achieve sustainable AAM with good mechanical strength and chloride ingress resistance.

Colorful superhydrophobic concrete coating

Kun Xu et al.

Summary: The colorful and robust superhydrophobic concrete (CSC) coating has a water contact angle of 158 +/- 0.5 degrees and a sliding angle of 5 +/- 0.8 degrees. It is composed of cement, sand, water-based stone protector, and dyes for concrete coloring. Its high robustness comes from the high adhesive force between the coating and the substrate, the inherent high hardness of concrete itself, and self-similarity of inside micro-structures. The CSC coating also exhibits excellent chemical durability and weather resistance.

Summary: Multifunctional cementitious composites with integrated self-sensing and hydrophobicity capacities were developed and investigated using conductive graphene nanoplate (GNP) and silicone hydrophobic powder (SHP). The highest compressive and flexural strengths were achieved with 1% SHP and 2% GNP, while water absorption decreased significantly with SHP content. The water contact angle initially increased and then decreased with the dosages of GNP and SHP.
