Synthesis, characterization and swelling behavior of high-performance antimicrobial biocompatible copolymer based on carboxymethyl xanthan

Ahmed M. Elgamal et al.

Summary: In this study, xanthan gum was carboxymethylated and then grafted with 4-vinyl pyridine (4-VP) in an aqueous phase using potassium persulphate (KPS) as an initiator. The aim was to obtain new biopolymer-synthetic hybrid materials with desirable physicochemical properties and antimicrobial activity. The reaction parameters were found to have an influence on the grafting yield (G), grafting efficiency (GE), and homopolymer (H) percentage. The structure, morphology, and thermal stability of the prepared copolymers were confirmed using FTIR, XRD, TGA, and SEM techniques. The swelling capacity of the copolymers was found to increase with increasing P4VP content and at a pH of 2.5 and %G of 420%, the highest swelling capacity was achieved. The grafted copolymer exhibited better antimicrobial activity compared to neat CMX, and its cytotoxicity was found to be non-toxic.

Highly reactive adsorbent based on carboxymethyl xanthan gum-g-poly(4-vinylpyridine) copolymer for the potential removal of Acid Orange 10 dye and Cr(VI) ions for water treatment

Ahmed M. Elgamal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal efficiency of anionic acid dye and hexavalent chromium using CMX-g-P(4VP) as an adsorbent. The results showed that the optimal pH for adsorption was 2.5. The adsorbent exhibited high adsorption capacities for both contaminants, and could be efficiently reused for multiple cycles.
