Research on geological and surfacial processes and major disaster effects in the Yellow River Basin

Hengxing Lan et al.

Summary: The Yellow River Basin is characterized by active geological and tectonic processes, rapid geomorphological evolution, and distinct climatic diversity, leading to varied and sudden major disasters. These disasters often form chains with severe consequences that impact ecology and geological safety. Future research should focus on coupling geological, surface, and climatic processes with disaster gestation mechanisms, clarify feedback effects between disasters and ecology, and develop integrated risk mitigation systems based on human-environmental harmony.

A new look at the statistics of tailings dam failures

Luca Piciullo et al.

Summary: Tailings dam failures have had disastrous consequences due to poor dam management practices, lack of knowledge on tailings behavior, and inadequate monitoring and management processes. This paper analyzes the statistics of tailings dam failures using an up-to-date database and proposes a regression analysis that considers the relationship between released volume and dam characteristics. The analysis shows that tailings dams built using the upstream construction method are more prone to failure.

Initiation and mobility of recurring loess flowslides on the Heifangtai irrigated terrace in China: Insights from hydrogeological conditions and liquefaction criteria

Fanyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the recurring loess flowslides in the Heifangtai terrace in China, which are induced by irrigation. It is found that hydrogeological conditions play a crucial role in initiating these flowslides, and the shear liquefaction behavior of saturated loess controls their mobility. New criteria for assessing liquefaction susceptibility are developed based on the study's findings. This research provides important insights into the dynamic mechanisms of loess flowslides and their implications for landslide hazard mitigation.

Movement process, geomorphological changes, and influencing factors of a reactivated loess landslide on the right bank of the middle of the Yellow River, China

Sheng Hu et al.

Summary: The main Beiguo landslide on the Heyang Loess Tableland in China occurred several decades ago and was completely reactivated in 2017. The development and existence of loess caves had a long-term and continuous influence on the reactivation of the landslide. The results suggest that the several days of abundant and continuous rainfall in 2017 were the final trigger for the reactivation.

Lessons Learned from the Two Major Tailings Dam Accidents in Brazil

Jair Carlos Koppe

Summary: This paper discusses the management practices, relevant legislation, and supervision of tailings dams in Minas Gerais, Brazil, as well as the possible causes of these dam breaks and evaluates whether the measures taken by National Mining Agency will prevent more such accidents. The failure mode for both tailings dams was liquefaction flow, and despite the ANM's efforts, further failures may occur due to many other tailings dams being in similar conditions.

Instrumented flume tests on the failure and fluidization of tailings dams induced by rainfall infiltration

W. Hu et al.

Summary: A study investigated the mechanisms of tailings-dam failure and fluidization through instrumented flume tests induced by artificial rainfall. The study found that continuous rainfall expanded macro-voids, led to particle rearrangement and local collapse, gradually increasing pore pressure and reducing shear strength. Antecedent rainfall raised moisture content, which promoted internal erosion and likely contributed significantly to dam failure.

A catastrophic flowslide that overrides a liquefied substrate: the 1983 Saleshan landslide in China

Fanyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the Saleshan landslide in Gansu, China in 1983, which traveled approximately 1 km due to the overrunning and liquefaction of alluvial sands in the river valley. The results demonstrate the transformation mechanism of the landslide and the increased hazard associated with substrate liquefaction.

Integrating Landslide Typology with Weighted Frequency Ratio Model for Landslide Susceptibility Mapping: A Case Study from Lanzhou City of Northwestern China

Heping Shu et al.

Summary: This study focused on landslide susceptibility zonation in Qilihe District, Lanzhou City, incorporating landslide classification and various influencing factors through a data-driven model. The results showed that the majority of landslide pixels were classified as high or very high susceptibility zones, with a satisfactory model accuracy. Consideration of landslide typology significantly improved the accuracy of the susceptibility assessment maps.
