Sub-bottom and bathymetry sonar inspection of postglacial lacustrine infill of the alpine lakes (Tatra Mts., Slovakia)

R. Dhavamani et al.

Summary: An acoustic survey using sub-bottom sonar and Autonomous Underwater Vehicle was conducted in Tatra Mts. lakes to investigate bottom topography, sediment thickness, and geodynamic factors influencing postglacial deposition. The study revealed different acoustic units with varying reflection configurations and amplitudes, reflecting the stratigraphy and lithology of the lakes. The presence of particular acoustic units may not be consistent across all lakes due to local and internal lake processes, which can also cause stratigraphic hiatuses.

A method for estimating the probability of glacial lake outburst floods based on logistic regression and geodetector: a case study of the Himalayan region

Xiangqi He et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a prediction model for the possibility of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and emphasizes the selection of easily available predictors. Using the Geodetector, four predictors were detected and analyzed. The probability prediction model achieved an overall accuracy of 86%, correctly classifying 78% of drained lakes and 90% of undrained lakes. The results provide practical and efficient references for local government and people.

Variations in glacier coverage in the Himalayas based on optical satellite data over the past 25 years

Qin Ji et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the distribution and changes in glacier coverage in the Himalayas from 1990 to 2015. The results showed that the glacier area decreased by 10.99% over the past 25 years, with accelerated shrinkage in the period 2010-2015. The highest ice loss occurred at lower elevations, and debris-free glaciers had a three times higher annual shrinking rate compared to debris-covered glaciers.

Improving the accuracy of glacial lake volume estimation: A case study in the Poiqu basin, central Himalayas

Miaomiao Qi et al.

Summary: This article introduces a volume-scaling relationship for moraine-dammed lakes based on the predictability of lake geometry parameters, and evaluates its performance compared to other formulas. The study finds that the new relationship shows a more robust performance and has no regional restrictions in the Himalayas. Additionally, using the new approach and high-resolution imagery, the sequential mapping of lakes in a basin reveals an increasing trend in total lake volume.

Reconceptualising flood risk assessment by incorporating sediment supply

Hongxi Liu et al.

Summary: Sediments have a serious impact on flood risk, but the lack of data and uncertainty in modeling hinder the incorporation of sediments into flood risk assessment systems. Through simulation of different types of sediment inflows, this study found that sudden sediment inflows greatly increased water levels, while constant inflows led to bed aggradation. Based on the impacts of different sediment inflow types on flood risk, a method to identify potential sediment risk was developed, and a framework for incorporating sediments into flood risk assessment was proposed.

Temporal and Spatial Changes and GLOF Susceptibility Assessment of Glacial Lakes in Nepal from 2000 to 2020

Jiayu Hu et al.

Summary: Glacial lakes in Nepal show an increasing trend in number and area, especially those located at altitudes between 4500 and 5500 meters. The potential glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) events of Tsho Rolpa, Lower Barun, and a lake with the code GL87091E27797N pose a significant threat to downstream regions. Continuous monitoring of the dynamics of glacial lakes and their surroundings is crucial due to the active status of GLOFs in Nepal.

Extreme flood modeling and mechanism over Crisul Alb basin in Romania

Mihaela Caian et al.

Summary: This study investigates extreme flooding events over Crisul Alb river basin in Romania using high-resolution regional climate modeling coupled with a hydrological model. The main mechanism leading to severe flooding in the area is identified as a dynamical modulation of large-scale flow forced by large-regional scale interaction, with systematic formation of secondary undulation of frontal lines under northerly flow. The accurate representation of large-scale information transmission, diabatic large-scale sources, and inner domain resolution play a crucial role in representing these extreme events.

Increasing glacial lake outburst flood hazard in response to surge glaciers in the Karakoram

Nazir Ahmed Bazai et al.

Summary: Unlike glaciers in other parts of the world, Karakoram glaciers show stable or increasing mass in response to global climate change, leading to the 'Karakoram anomaly'. The region experiences irregular glacier surges that pose a threat of ice dam lake formation and outburst flooding. This study documents 179 GLOFs from 1533 to 2020, predicting future increases in frequency due to glacier surge cycles and anomalous behavior.

Evaluation of Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Susceptibility Using Multi-Criteria Assessment Framework in Mahalangur Himalaya

Nitesh Khadka et al.

Summary: The ongoing recession of glaciers in the Himalaya due to global climate change has significant impacts on the formation and expansion of glacial lakes, leading to potential glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) which pose threats to downstream communities. A recent study in the Mahalangur Himalaya region identified seven glacial lakes with very high GLOF susceptibility based on analysis of historical events. Scientists emphasize the need for regular monitoring and detailed fieldwork on these highly susceptible glacial lakes to improve early warning systems and reduce disaster risks for communities downstream.

The 2020 glacial lake outburst flood process chain at Lake Salkantaycocha (Cordillera Vilcabamba, Peru)

Oscar Vilca et al.

Summary: This paper investigates a landslide-triggered glacial lake outburst flood process that occurred in the Peruvian Andes on February 23, 2020. The initial slide evolved into a rock/ice avalanche, impacting a moraine-dammed lake and triggering a displacement wave which eroded the dam, resulting in a far-reaching flood causing fatalities downstream. The study reveals the dynamics of the event through field investigations, remotely sensed data, meteorological data, and computer simulations, contributing to the understanding of such events in changing high-mountain regions.

Accelerated global glacier mass loss in the early twenty-first century

Summary: The study found that glaciers around the world are melting at an accelerated rate, with contrasting patterns of mass loss in different geographical regions. Overall, glaciers are losing mass more rapidly, with similar or even larger acceleration rates than Greenland or Antarctic ice sheets taken separately. These findings also highlight the importance of understanding drivers that influence glacier change to predict future changes and mitigate the impacts of sea-level rise.

Summary: This study assessed the risk of glacial lake outburst floods for Guangxieco Proglacial Lake on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, revealing significant changes in Gongzo Glacier and the Proglacial Lake area. The study found that a combination of heavy precipitation, abnormal air temperature, and increased water pressure from rainfall and meltwater contributed to a GLOF event in 1988.
