New insights into lake responses to rapid climate change: the Younger Dryas in Lake Gosciaz, central Poland

Daniela Mueller et al.

Summary: The sediment profile from Lake Goscia(z) in central Poland provides a unique opportunity to investigate detailed lake system responses to rapid climate cooling and warming during the Younger Dryas period. Results show that the cooling at the Younger Dryas onset lasted longer than the terminal warming, with different environmental responses involving various proxy sensitivities and threshold processes. The research indicates complex and differing environmental changes in response to major climate shifts during the Younger Dryas.

Varve microfacies and chronology from a new sediment record of Lake Gosciaz (Poland)

Alicja Bonk et al.

Summary: The study presents a detailed sediment record of Lake Gosciaz in Central Poland, which serves as a comprehensive climate archive of the Late Glacial and the Holocene in Central Europe. The research utilized microfacies analyses, mu XRF core scanning, and varve chronology to identify lithozones and depositional changes. The findings reveal significant shifts in geochemistry during the Holocene and Late Glacial, including increased calcite precipitation and primary productivity around 7940 varve yr BP, possibly influenced by local hydrological changes.

Elemental composition of biogenic sediments reveals palaeoclimatic changes during the Late Weichselian in a Central European river valley: A statistical approach

Daniel Okupny et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the lithological and geochemical characteristics of sediment fillings in a small river valley in Central Europe during the Late Weischselian period. It found differentiation in composition and grain-size properties due to changes in hydroclimatic conditions and geology. The sediments, mainly mineral or organic-mineral, contained high levels of lithophilic elements such as Na, K, and Mg, indicating mechanical denudation processes in the Grabia River valley during the Late Weischselian period.

Effects of experimental warming on Betula nana epidermal cell growth tested over its maximum climatological growth range

Fabian E. Z. Ercan et al.

Summary: The study compared the effects of in-situ warming on leaf epidermal cell expansion in Betula nana in Finland, Greenland, and Poland. The results showed enhanced leaf epidermal cell expansion under experimental warming, except for the extremely low temperature Greenland site. This demonstrates a strong response of leaf growth at individual cell level to growing season temperature, but also suggests that in harsh conditions other environmental factors may limit this response.
