Potassium-enriched graphite for use as stable hybrid anodes in high-efficiency potassium batteries

Yu Lei et al.

Summary: Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have attracted attention due to their low cost and high energy density. However, graphite, as a promising anode candidate, still has limited capacity and low coulombic efficiency. In this study, a potassium-enriched graphite (KRG) anode is proposed, which overcomes the limitations of traditional graphite. KRG exhibits a robust mixed conducting network, uniform and efficient potassium metal plating/stripping, and a stable solid-electrolyte interphase. The KRG anode demonstrates high capacity and stability.

Mechanistic Elucidation of Electronically Conductive PEDOT:PSS Tailored Binder for a Potassium-Ion Battery Graphite Anode: Electrochemical, Mechanical, and Thermal Safety Aspects

Daniel A. Gribble et al.

Summary: This study improves the performance of potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) by modifying the conductive binder. The use of conductive polymer PEDOT:PSS instead of insulating PVDF improves the cycle life and rate capability of the batteries. However, PEDOT:PSS without carbon black performs poorly in electrochemical studies due to redox activity between PEDOT:PSS and K+. Additionally, the study identifies issues with the brittleness and poor wettability of PEDOT:PSS, but also highlights its improved stability against heat generation.

Strategies for Harnessing High Rate and Cycle Performance from Graphite Electrodes in Potassium-Ion Batteries

Shubham Kaushik et al.

Summary: This study investigates the physical properties and electrochemical behavior of an inorganic ionic liquid electrolyte with high K+ concentration at an intermediate temperature, aiming to overcome the challenges faced by potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). The research successfully achieves high rate capabilities and long cycle life of graphite negative electrodes by forming a stable inorganic solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) through the use of the electrolyte. The findings provide valuable insights into the synergistic effects between the concentrated K+ electrolyte and the all-inorganic SEI during the electrochemical operations of PIBs.

Synthesis of KVPO4F/Carbon Porous Single Crystalline Nanoplates for High-Rate Potassium-Ion Batteries

Jiaying Liao et al.

Summary: In this study, carbon-coated KVPO4F nanoplates were synthesized using a simple one-step sintering process, where the V-F-C bond generated by fluorinated-polymer-derived carbon at the interface of KVPO4F/C nanoplates reduced F loss and improved the electronic conductivity and ion migration ability of KVPO4F. The as-synthesized KVPO4F/C cathode exhibited excellent capacity and rate capability, and the KVPO4F/C//soft carbon full cell showed a high energy density.

Robust carbon nanotube-interwoven KFeSO4F microspheres as reliable potassium cathodes

Jiaying Liao et al.

Summary: Orthorhombic iron-based fluorosulfate KFeSO4F is a promising cathode material for potassium-ion batteries due to its high capacity, voltage plateau, and unique potassium ion conduction pathway. However, its poor thermostability and low electronic conductivity present challenges for its synthesis and electrochemical performance. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were introduced into KFeSO4F microspheres to enhance their electronic conductivity and create high-performance potassium-ion batteries. The KFSF@CNTs/DEG cathode exhibited excellent reversible capacity, high working voltage, and long-term capacity retention. The results demonstrated that the addition of CNTs and the use of diethylene glycol (DEG) contributed to the improved electrochemical performance of KFSF@CNTs/DEG through the formation of microspheres with interwoven CNTs and enhanced structural stability and potassium ion diffusion rate.

Manipulating the Solvation Structure of Nonflammable Electrolyte and Interface to Enable Unprecedented Stability of Graphite Anodes beyond 2 Years for Safe Potassium-Ion Batteries

Sailin Liu et al.

Summary: This study presents a nonflammable, moderate-concentration electrolyte highly compatible with graphite anodes that exhibits exceptional cycling stability. The stability of the electrolyte is attributed to the nearly 100% solvation of TMP molecules with K+ cations and the formation of a F-rich solid electrolyte interphase. The findings highlight the importance of electrolyte-interface compatibility and offer new opportunities for designing safe and practical PIBs.

Summary: The cycling stability of graphite anodes can be significantly improved by regulating the coordination of solvent molecules with KPF6 via a high-temperature precycling step. Additionally, the formation of a stable and uniform organic-rich passivation layer on graphite anodes after high-temperature precycling contributes to the enhanced performance of potassium ion batteries. Molecular dynamics simulations were conducted to study the solvation chemistry of the electrolytes, providing insights into the mechanism behind the improved performance.
