Sources, production and commercial applications of fungal chitosan: A review

Tanzina Huq et al.

Summary: Chitosan, a biopolymer, can be obtained from animal/marine sources or derived from agricultural waste like mushrooms or various fungi through chitin deacetylation. The cell walls of filamentous fungi provide an easy method for chitin extraction, allowing for control over the physicochemical characteristics of fungal chitosan compared to chitosan from crustacean sources. Fungal sourced chitosan finds applications in food, pharmaceutical, and biomedical fields, serving as an antimicrobial agent, coating material, water purification agent, or bio-pesticide. This review focuses on the extraction of chitin from mushrooms or different fungal sources, as well as highlighting various applications of commercial chitosan products.

Simultaneous adsorption of tetracycline, ammonium and phosphate from wastewater by iron and nitrogen modified biochar: Kinetics, isotherm, thermodynamic and mechanism

Xiumin Li et al.

Summary: In this study, an efficient adsorbent Fe/N@BC was synthesized by Fe-N co-modification for the simultaneous removal of tetracycline, NH4+-N and PO43-P from wastewater. Fe/N@BC exhibited excellent adsorption performance and higher adsorption capacities compared to other adsorbents. The adsorption mechanism involved various interactions such as pore filling, electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, surface complexation, surface precipitation, H bond and pi-pi interaction. Fe/N@BC also showed promising potential for multi-pollutant removal even after multiple cycles.

Adsorption of tetracycline hydrochloride on layered double hydroxide loaded carbon nanotubes and site energy distribution analysis

Caifeng Xia et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel composite material LDH@CNT was prepared using an in-situ method, which had a favorable adsorbent structure due to the mutual support of LDHs and CNTs. The adsorption kinetics of LDHs, CNTs, and LDH@CNT composites for tetracycline were well described by intraparticle diffusion and pseudo-second-order models, indicating that the adsorption site played a major role. The Generalized Langmuir model was found to better describe the adsorption process than the Langmuir model, suggesting multiple interactions between tetracycline and the composite material. Site energy distribution theory combined with molecular simulation explained the adsorption mechanisms, and the removal of tetracycline by LDHs, CNTs, and LDH@CNT composites was calculated. The results showed that LDH@CNT composites had lower average site energies compared to LDHs and CNTs, but had more exposed adsorption active sites, leading to improved removal efficiency of tetracycline.

Sustainable regeneration of a honeycomb carbon aerogel used as a high-capacity adsorbent for Fluoxetine removal

Silvia Escudero-Curiel et al.

Summary: Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) pose harm to ecosystems and human health, and regulating discharges at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has become a priority. This study evaluated the removal of Fluoxetine (FLX) through adsorption and regeneration cycles using NQ40 honeycomb 3D carbon aerogel as a high-capacity adsorbent. The regeneration process using Fenton and Fenton-like methods demonstrated the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide in removing high concentrations of FLX.

In-situ immobilization of ZIF-67 on wood aerogel for effective removal of tetracycline from water

Guanyu Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a composite adsorbent material, ZIF-67@WA, was successfully fabricated by anchoring ZIF-67 rhombic dodecahedron on wood aerogel to improve the practical application of MOF materials in pollutant removal from wastewater. The composite showed excellent tetracycline adsorption capacity, comparable to previously reported adsorbents, and could be recycled multiple times with minimal secondary contamination. The study suggests that ZIF-67@WA has the potential to effectively remove tetracycline from water due to its superior adsorption performance, compressibility, light weight, and facile separation.
