Controlling lignin solubility and hydrogenolysis selectivity by acetal-mediated functionalization

Graham R. Dick et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of aldehyde stabilization to modify lignin structure and properties for potential applications. By using bifunctional aldehydes, specific functionalities can be introduced into lignin to control its physical properties. The formation of acetal-stabilized lignins with novel solubility properties in polar or non-polar solvents like water and toluene is demonstrated. Through the hydrogenolysis of select lignins, the impact of solvent on lignin hydrogenolysis is elucidated, showing the potential for green chemical processes.

Dual-catalyst catalytic pyrolysis of poplar sawdust: A systematic study on first-layered catalysts

Xiangfei Xue et al.

Summary: Dual-catalyst catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) technology is effective in converting biomass waste into hydrocarbon-rich bio-oils. This study investigated the effect of different first-layered catalysts on the bio-oil production during dual-catalyst CFP of poplar sawdust. It was found that using porous materials as the first-layered catalysts, in combination with ZSM-5 zeolite, resulted in the highest bio-oil yield and satisfactory hydrocarbon selectivity. The synergistic effects of the dual-layered catalysts were also studied, and it was observed that the porous materials exhibited better synergy with ZSM-5 in deoxygenating all the oxygenate types.
