Summary: The study focused on improving antibiotics in the pharmaceutical industry, with the first investigation on separating pseudomonic acids through reactive extraction. The maximum extraction yield (88.78%) was achieved at pH 4, 20 g/L extractant, and 10% octanol added to the organic solvent. Additionally, the addition of the phase modifier 1-octanol significantly improved the extraction yield for Pseudomonic acid A.

Reactive separation of nicotinic acid from aqueous solution using tri-n-octylamine in biocompatible modifier diluent mixture: Influencing parameters exploration, mechanism insights, thermodynamics, regeneration of solvents and column design

Anju Kumari et al.

Summary: In this study, reactive extraction using tri-n-octylamine (TOA) with n-dodecane and lauryl alcohol as a biocompatible extraction system was investigated as a method for recovering nicotinic acid (NA). The study explored and optimized the effects of initial NA concentration, TOA concentration, initial pH value, and temperature on the extraction process. The equilibrium mechanism was determined through stoichiometry reactions and equilibrium constants. Theoretical reaction mechanisms were supported by FT-IR data analysis. The suitability of the process was evaluated through entropy, enthalpy, and Gibbs' free energy calculations. A suitable column design was proposed for the process, and solvent regeneration was achieved using NaOH solutions. This study is valuable for intensifying the recovery of NA and designing an economical industrial-scale process.

Reactive extraction of zinc ions in the Scheibel column; A case study by applying the mathematical modelling of mass transfer with forward mixing

Benyamin Shakib et al.

Summary: This study presents an experimental and modeling investigation on the feasibility of the Scheibel extraction column for heavy metal separation from chloride solution. The best extraction and stripping rates were found to be 99.56% and 98.11% respectively, with good agreement between theoretical models and experimental data. Mathematical modeling revealed that axial dispersion coefficients in the reactive mass transfer data improve with increased agitation speed and dispersed phase rate, while having an inverse relation with the continuous phase flow rate. This research provides valuable information for designing solvent extraction columns in the metallurgical industry.
