DeepQuake - An application of CNN for seismo-acoustic event classification in The Netherlands

Luca Trani et al.

Summary: Recent developments in instrumentation and methodology have driven advances in solid Earth sciences, allowing data centres to acquire larger datasets of higher quality. Artificial Intelligence methods, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), offer opportunities to analyze this growing information potential. This paper investigates the use of CNN for seismo-acoustic event classification in the Netherlands, proposing a specialized CNN architecture that achieves high performance in source detection. The study also focuses on explainability aspects and introduces a method to gain insights into the behavior of deep learning classification systems, providing a usable tool for domain experts and promoting the operational implementation of AI-based methods.

Automated Seismo-Volcanic Event Detection Applied to Stromboli (Italy)

Darius Fenner et al.

Summary: This study proposes an automated approach called the Adaptive-Window Volcanic Event Selection Analysis Module (AWESAM) to generate catalogs of volcanic eruptions. The module is capable of reliably detecting both small and frequent events as well as major explosions. Testing on seismic recordings from Stromboli volcano in Italy showed that AWESAM can accurately identify and record volcano events.

A Comprehensive Hazard Assessment of the Caribbean

Megan Torpey Zimmerman et al.

Summary: This study presents a probabilistic seismic hazard analysis for the Caribbean region, integrating global and regional earthquake catalogs, fault databases, and geodetic data. Regression relationships were developed to convert non-moment magnitudes to moment magnitudes. A combination of areal and fault sources was used to model seismicity across the entire region, accounting for both shallow and deep earthquakes. Kinematic modeling and balancing of seismic moments were incorporated, and time-dependent rupture probabilities were considered for selected faults. Weighted logic trees were used to account for uncertainty. The hazard results for peak ground acceleration at key return periods were compared to other regional studies.

Practical Volcano-Independent Recognition of Seismic Events: VULCAN.ears Project

Guillermo Cortes et al.

Summary: The text discusses the importance of volcano seismic recognition technology and the current problems with manual classification of seismic events. It introduces a solution called Volcano-Independent VSR (VI.VSR) to generate labeled seismic catalogs for observatories lacking resources. By training universal models and designing user-friendly tools, this technology can effectively monitor active volcanoes and identify seismic events in real-time.
