Supercritical Hydrothermal Synthesis of Organic-Modified Ce1-xZrxO2-δ (0≤x≤1) Nanoparticles as a Low-Temperature Oxygen Carrier

Akira Yoko et al.

Summary: In this study, organic surface-modified Ce1-xZrxO2-delta nanoparticles were synthesized using supercritical hydrothermal method. Zr intake into the CeO2 lattice and vice versa was observed. The surface modification of Ce1-xZrxO2-delta nanoparticles with carboxylic acids resulted in decreased particle size and induced Zr into the CeO2 lattice. The 70% Zr loading sample exhibited extraordinarily high oxygen storage capacity at low temperatures.

Uniform Organically Modified CeO2Nanoparticles Synthesized from a Carboxylate Complex under Supercritical Hydrothermal Conditions: Impact of Ce Valence

Yuki Omura et al.

Summary: In this study, cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles were synthesized by supercritical hydrothermal method using different valences of cerium carboxylate complexes. When Ce(III) octanoate was used, Ce(OH)3 nanorods were predominantly formed, while CeO2 nanoparticles were formed as a minor product. Uniform CeO2 nanoparticles were synthesized directly when Ce(IV) octanoate was used. The CeO2 nanoparticles synthesized from Ce(IV) octanoate were smaller and more uniform than those synthesized using cerium(IV) hydroxide Ce(OH)4 in the previously reported method.

Atomistic origin of high-concentration Ce3+ in {100}-faceted Cr-substituted CeO2 nanocrystals

Xiaodong Hao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of Cr doping on CeO2 nanocrystals through experimental and theoretical analysis, revealing that Cr dopant increases the amount of Ce3+ cations, reduces the formation energy of V(O)s, and enhances the mobility of oxygen atoms in nano-sized CeO2. These effects result in an improved oxygen storage capacity of CeO2 nanocrystals and provide insights into the role of dopants in the formation and distribution of V(O)s.

Optimization of phosphor concentration of surface-modified Bi2O3 nanoparticle-loaded plastic scintillators for high-energy photon detection

Arisa Magi et al.

Summary: The study synthesized 3-phenylpropionic acid (3-PPA)-modified Bi2O3 nanoparticle-loaded plastic scintillators to achieve fast scintillators with high detection efficiency of high-energy X-rays. By optimizing the content of b-PBD in the plastic scintillators and incorporating surface-modified Bi2O3 nanoparticles, the detection efficiency for high-energy photons was enhanced. The detectors equipped with the studied samples showed sub-nanosecond scale time resolution, indicating a very fast response.

Solvent accommodation effect on dispersibility of metal oxide nanoparticle with chemisorbed organic shell

Takaaki Tomai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dispersibility of organically-modified nanoparticles in various solvents, finding that solvent molecular size and affinity between organic modifier and solvent molecules are key factors affecting dispersibility. The research suggests that smaller solvent molecules can disperse nanoparticles more efficiently. Two approaches based on the concept of solvent accommodation are proposed to improve nanoparticle dispersibility in desired solvents, showing enhanced dispersibility trends.

Fabrication of Liquid Scintillators Loaded with 6-Phenylhexanoic Acid-Modified ZrO2 Nanoparticles for Observation of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

Akito Watanabe et al.

Summary: Observing neutrinoless double beta decay is crucial in nuclear and particle physics. Developing organic liquid scintillators with high transparency and a high concentration of target isotopes is important for such experiments. By synthesizing 6-phenylhexanoic acid-modified ZrO2 nanoparticles under sub/supercritical hydrothermal conditions, suitable nanoparticles for loading in liquid scintillators were obtained.

Facile Regeneration Strategy for Facet-Controlled Nanocatalysts via the Dissolution-Reprecipitation Process Promoted by an Organic Modifier

Takaaki Tomai et al.

Summary: The study introduces a method for regenerating degraded facet-controlled nanoparticle catalysts through the dissolution-reprecipitation process and surface crystalline structure reorientation using an organic modifier. The modifier stabilizes the (100) facet, accelerates the dissolution-reprecipitation process, and promotes facet modification and catalyst regeneration.

Nucleation and Coalescence of BaTiO3 Using a Continuous Flow Reactor with Water-Ethanol Mixed Solvents

Akira Yoko et al.

Summary: Formation of BaTiO3 was studied in water-ethanol mixed solvents with varying dielectric properties. Higher precursor concentrations in ethanol-rich solvents resulted in smaller particles, suggesting nucleation of larger BaTiO3 originates from these small particles. Collision-induced growth was suppressed by solvent effects, impacting particle size.

Mechanisms of the surface reaction and crystal growth of cerium oxide by supercritical hydrothermal treatment with carboxylic acids

Yuki Omura et al.

Summary: This study revealed the effects of carboxylic acids on the surface reaction and crystal growth of CeO2 in supercritical hydrothermal treatment. Decanoic acid significantly increases the dissolved amount of cerium ions and promotes reprecipitation of CeO2, leading to particle growth. Appropriate amounts of decanoic acid and water accelerate the dissolution-reprecipitation cycle, while higher temperature enhances particle growth kinetics.
