What is a plant nutrient? Changing definitions to advance science and innovation in plant nutrition

Patrick H. Brown et al.

Summary: The current definitions of plant nutrients are narrow and not conducive to innovation and research. A new definition based on science and practice is proposed to promote innovation and discovery in the field of plant nutrition.

Nickel-mediated lead dynamics and their interactive effect on lead partitioning and phytoremediation indices in spinach

Mohan Lal Dotaniya et al.

Summary: A greenhouse research was conducted to study the translocation dynamics of lead (Pb) in spinach mediated by nickel (Ni) application. The study found that increasing Pb application in soil led to a decrease in dry matter yield of plant roots and above-ground biomass. Pb accumulation was observed in both roots and above-ground biomass, with higher accumulation in roots. The application of Ni reduced Pb uptake in spinach roots and above-ground biomass. Furthermore, Ni had a negative impact on various parameters of Pb uptake. The findings of this study have implications for understanding the interaction between Pb and Ni and treating soil contaminated by industrial wastewater.

The WHO Guidelines for Safe Wastewater Use in Agriculture: A Review of Implementation Challenges and Possible Solutions in the Global South

Pay Drechsel et al.

Summary: Globally, the use of untreated or partly treated wastewater in agriculture exceeds the use of well-treated wastewater. Despite significant investments in treatment, this gap may have increased due to factors such as population growth. To reduce health risks, the WHO suggests a broader concept emphasizing the importance of risk-reducing practices, especially for low-income countries, which presents challenges in shifting focus from technical solutions to human behavior change.

Chemical and microbial characterization of sugarcane mill mud for soil applications

Minori Uchimiya et al.

Summary: This study reports on the chemical and microbial characteristics of sugarcane mill muds of diverse origin and ages. The chemical signature allowed grouping of sample types, and microbial diversity analyses visualized aging caused by outdoor exposures. The results suggest that the chemistry of the bulk soil drives the turnover of the microbiome.

Management of pressmud (agroindustry by-product) by conversion to value-added products: a review

Aparna Gunjal et al.

Summary: This review discusses the management and value-addition of agroindustry by-products, focusing on the conversion of pressmud into various value-added products. Pressmud, as an agroindustry by-product, is eco-friendly, cheap and readily available. The review is significant as it addresses the environmentally safe and economical approach of managing and adding value to pressmud.
