Planning experiments: Updated guidance on experimental design and analysis and their reporting III

Michael J. Curtis et al.

Summary: This editorial provides guidance for scientists planning to publish in the British Journal of Pharmacology (BJP) and updates the requirements on experimental design and analysis for BJP manuscripts. It addresses new issues that have arisen in the course of handling manuscripts and emphasizes three challenging aspects of design: randomization, blinded analysis, and balance of group sizes.

Prenatal fluoxetine has long-lasting, differential effects on respiratory control in male and female rats

Vivian Biancardi et al.

Summary: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as fluoxetine (FLX), are commonly used antidepressant drugs during pregnancy. This study investigated the effects of prenatal FLX exposure on breathing and brainstem monoaminergic groups in rats. The results showed that prenatal FLX exposure led to long-lasting, sex-specific changes in baseline breathing pattern and ventilatory responses to respiratory challenges. These changes were associated with alterations in the number of 5-HT and TH neurons in specific brain regions.

Prenatal Cannabinoid Exposure: Emerging Evidence of Physiological and Neuropsychiatric Abnormalities

Mina G. Nashed et al.

Summary: The prevalence of cannabis use during pregnancy varies widely in North America, with disparities likely due to underestimates and lack of evidence-based policy. Prenatal cannabis exposure has been linked to issues such as low birth weight, and emerging evidence suggests wide-ranging physiological and neurodevelopmental consequences. More rigorous investigation into the long-term effects of prenatal cannabis exposure is needed, especially considering the increase in potency and potential risks associated with THC exposure during pregnancy.

A5 noradrenergic neurons and breathing control in neonate rats

Camila L. Taxini et al.

Summary: The pontine A5 noradrenergic group is involved in the maturation of the respiratory system in rats before birth. These neurons contribute to the neural network responsible for respiratory rhythmogenesis. In neonatal rats, A5 noradrenergic neurons do not participate in the control of ventilation under baseline and hypercapnic conditions, but exert an inhibitory modulation on breathing variability under hypoxic challenge in early life (P7-8).

Effects of prenatal synthetic cannabinoid exposure on the cerebellum of adolescent rat offspring

Priyanka D. Pinky et al.

Summary: Prenatal cannabinoid exposure can lead to long-lasting effects on the cerebellum, including altered oxidative stress markers, enhanced mitochondrial function, and changes in apoptotic protein levels. This exposure enhances neuronal survival and mitochondrial activity, providing unique effects on the cerebellum compared to other brain regions. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind these alterations and their impact on behavior.
