Relationship between thyroid hormone parameters and exposure to a mixture of organochlorine pesticides, mercury and nutrients in the cord blood of newborns

Ju Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the associations of prenatal exposure to a mixture of OCPs, Hg, DHA, EPA and Se with thyroid hormone parameters in newborns, revealing dose-response relationships between mixture components and outcomes, but overall effects were not significant. The results suggest that prenatal exposure to p,p'-DDE, HCB and EPA as part of a mixture might affect thyroid function of newborns in independent and interactive ways, warranting further investigation into potential biological mechanisms.

Selective Maternal Seeding and Rearing Environment From Birth to Weaning Shape the Developing Piglet Gut Microbiome

Wei Chen et al.

Summary: The vaginal microbiota is the primary source of the gut microbiota in piglets within 3 days after birth and is gradually replaced by the sow fecal and slatted floor microbiota over time. The intestinal microbial diversity, composition, and function significantly change as the piglets age, reflecting the effect of the maternal and environmental microbial sources.

Gut Microbiota-Derived Metabolite Signature in Suckling and Weaned Piglets

Martin Beaumont et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota produces different metabolites in suckling and weaned piglets, including short-chain fatty acids and biogenic amines. The origin of the piglets also impacts the levels of certain bacterial metabolites. The fecal metabolome signatures in suckling and weaned piglets are associated with specific microbiota-predicted functionalities, structure, and diversity.

Development of piglet gut microbiota at the time of weaning influences development of postweaning diarrhea - A field study

Daniela Karasova et al.

Summary: The study revealed that certain microbial populations before weaning may increase the risk of piglets developing diarrhea, while other microbial populations after weaning may enhance piglet health and disease resistance. Therefore, changes in microbiota before and after weaning are crucial for piglet resistance to postweaning diarrhea under field conditions.

Dietary seaweed-derived polysaccharides improve growth performance of weaned pigs through maintaining intestinal barrier function and modulating gut microbial populations

Tiande Zou et al.

Summary: The study found that seaweed-derived polysaccharides (SDP) are beneficial for growth performance and intestinal health in weaned pigs. SDP supplementation improved ADG, reduced F/G ratio, decreased diarrhea rate, and enhanced beneficial gut microbiota and concentrations of short-chain fatty acids in the intestines.

Akkermansia muciniphila secretes a glucagon-like peptide-1-inducing protein that improves glucose homeostasis and ameliorates metabolic disease in mice

Hyo Shin Yoon et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Akkermansia muciniphila increases thermogenesis and GLP-1 secretion in mice by inducing uncoupling protein 1. A protein secreted by A. muciniphila, P9, interacts with ICAM-2 and can target metabolic diseases. This interaction could be a potential therapeutic target for such diseases.
