Cancer statistics for African American/Black People 2022

Angela N. Giaquinto et al.

Summary: African American/Black individuals bear a disproportionate cancer burden, with high mortality and low survival rates compared to other racial/ethnic groups. Data from the American Cancer Society shows that in 2018, there were significant disparities in cancer incidence, mortality, survival, screening, and risk factors among Black people in the United States. The projected numbers for 2022 indicate a high number of new cancer cases and deaths among Black individuals. Black men have higher incidence and mortality rates for certain cancers, such as myeloma, stomach cancer, and prostate cancer. The disparity in overall cancer mortality between Black and White men is narrowing, but the decline in prostate cancer mortality among Black men has slowed. Black women have a lower incidence rate but higher mortality rates for certain cancers, such as endometrial and breast cancer. Breast cancer has become the leading cause of cancer death among Black women.

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Rural-Urban Trends in 5-Year Survival of Patients With Lung, Prostate, Breast, and Colorectal Cancers: 1975-2011 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)

Marquita W. Lewis-Thames et al.

Summary: Considering the rural-urban cancer incidence and mortality trends, it is crucial to study the survival trends for different racial and ethnic groups in the rural-urban areas. This study examined the 5-year cancer-specific survival probabilities for lung, prostate, breast, and colorectal cancers among diverse racial and ethnic groups in national rural-urban areas. The findings suggest that non-Hispanic Black patients with cancer are particularly vulnerable to cancer burden, and action is needed to reverse the survival trends.

The Emergence of the Racial Disparity in US Breast-Cancer Mortality

Ismail Jatoi et al.

Summary: The racial disparity in breast-cancer mortality in the United States is due to the unequal benefit derived by Black women from interventions such as mammography screening and adjuvant endocrine therapy. Removing barriers to health care access could help mitigate the racial divide in breast-cancer mortality.

Factors such as race, social determinants, and geographic residence may influence the treatment delays of Black breast cancer patients.

Burden and management of type 2 diabetes in rural United States

Sagar B. Dugani et al.

Summary: Rural areas in the United States have a higher burden of type 2 diabetes compared to urban areas, but there is limited information on risk factors and interventions for T2DM prevention and management in rural areas. Highlighted classification systems and burden of T2DM in rural areas, emphasized risk factors and interventions for T2DM, and identified the role of technology in education and counselling for rural patients. Studies show co-existence of T2DM and depression/psychological symptoms, and there is an urgent need for tailored interventions for rural areas to address the disproportionate burden of T2DM.

The Intersection of Rural Residence and Minority Race/Ethnicity in Cancer Disparities in the United States

Whitney E. Zahnd et al.

Summary: In America, one in every twenty-five people is a racial/ethnic minority living in rural areas. These populations face greater poverty and lack of access to care, putting them at higher risk for cancer and experiencing poorer outcomes. More research is needed to understand the disparities experienced by all rural racial/ethnic minority populations, with policies and interventions aiming to increase access to care and resources to reduce these disparities.

Geographic Disparities in Late-Stage Breast Cancer Diagnosis Rates and Their Persistence Over Time

Lee R. Mobley et al.

Summary: The study identified geographic patterns in the United States where rates of late-stage breast cancer are high over time, associated with factors such as poverty, lower socioeconomic status, worse housing characteristics, lack of health insurance, limited access to mammography, and specific racial/ethnic compositions. The persistent hot spots were significantly more likely to be observed among poor, rural, African American, or Hispanic communities, but not among poor, rural, White communities. This analysis provides insights for public health efforts to reduce disparities in breast cancer diagnosis.

Identifying key barriers to effective breast cancer control in rural settings

Brian L. Sprague et al.

Summary: Breast cancer control in rural areas faces challenges due to shortages of primary care and specialist providers, as well as geographic distance from medical facilities. Lower mammography screening utilization rates and increased late stage breast cancer cases are observed among rural women. Improving access to treatment is key to enhancing breast cancer outcomes in rural settings.
