Enhanced Expression of Human Endogenous Retroviruses, TRIM28 and SETDB1 in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Pier-Angelo Tovo et al.

Summary: It has been found that the expression levels of TRIM28, SETDB1, and several HERV genes are significantly higher in the blood of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) compared to healthy individuals. Positive correlations were observed between the mRNA levels of TRIM28 or SETDB1 and every HERV gene in ASD patients. These findings suggest that TRIM28/SETDB1 and multiple HERVs may play important roles in the pathogenesis of ASD.

Neuronal activity increases translocator protein (TSPO) levels

Tina Notter et al.

Summary: The study found that neuronal activity can modify TSPO levels in the adult central nervous system. TSPO gene and protein are widely expressed in the hippocampus, but their levels increase only in neurons after stimulating neuronal activity, rather than in glial cells.

Human endogenous retrovirus W family envelope protein (HERV-W env) facilitates the production of TNF-α and IL-10 by inhibiting MyD88s in glial cells

Xiuling Wang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that HERV-W env upregulates the expressions of TNF-alpha and IL-10 by inhibiting the production of MyD88s in glial cells. This immune pathogenesis mechanism involving TLR4 and MyD88 sheds light on the role of HERV-W env in neuropsychiatric disorders.

Behavioral, neuroanatomical, and molecular correlates of resilience and susceptibility to maternal immune activation

Flavia S. Mueller et al.

Summary: Research has shown that offspring exposed to the same MIA can be divided into different subgroups with significant differences in behavior, transcription, brain networks, and immune spectra. Offspring with a high innate inflammatory cytokine status displayed impairments in social approach and sensorimotor gating in adulthood.

Alterations in Retrotransposition, Synaptic Connectivity, and Myelination Implicated by Transcriptomic Changes Following Maternal Immune Activation in Nonhuman Primates

Nicholas F. Page et al.

Summary: Utilizing a nonhuman primate model exposed to a viral mimic during pregnancy, researchers studied the impact of gene expression in the offspring's brain, identifying 266 unique genes with differential expression in at least one brain region, particularly in the hippocampus. These findings help elucidate how MIA may increase the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders through molecular pathways.

Identification of inflammatory subgroups of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder patients with HERV-W ENV antigenemia by unsupervised cluster analysis

Ryad Tamouza et al.

Summary: Our study found that subsets of patients with schizophrenia (approximately 41%) and bipolar disorder (approximately 28%) show positive antigenemia for HERV-W ENV protein, while the large majority of healthy controls (96%) was found to be negative. Unsupervised cluster analysis identified two main clusters of patients, best predicted by the presence or absence of HERV-W ENV protein. HERV-W expression was associated with increased serum levels of inflammatory cytokines and higher childhood maltreatment scores.
