Historical redlining and food environments: A study of 102 urban areas in the United States

Min Li et al.

Summary: The study found that neighborhoods affected by historical redlining policies have unhealthier retail food environments, even in present-day economically and racially privileged census tracts. This highlights how structural discrimination and racial residential segregation have led to uneven food environments.

The legacy of structural racism: Associations between historic redlining, current mortgage lending, and health

Emily E. Lynch et al.

Summary: The study highlights how structural racism embedded in the U.S. housing market is a key factor contributing to racial health inequities. In Milwaukee, greater historic redlining is associated with current lending discrimination, leading to poorer neighborhood health outcomes.

A Systematic Policy Review of Black Maternal Health-Related Policies Proposed Federally and in Massachusetts: 2010-2020

Keri Carvalho et al.

Summary: Over the past decade, there has been an increase in policies proposed to address racial disparities and health equity in maternal health in the United States. While half of national policies proposed showed positive impact on health equity, only two policies became law, with only one directly addressing racial disparities and having a positive impact on health equity.

To Serve and Protect Whom? Using Composite Counter-Storytelling to Explore Black and Indigenous Youth Experiences and Perceptions of the Police in Canada

Kanika Samuels-Wortley

Summary: Research in the US and UK shows low perceptions of police among youth and racialized communities, but little is known about racialized youth perceptions of police in Canada due to bans on collecting race-based data. This paper uses critical race methodology to highlight Black and Indigenous youth perspectives and experiences with law enforcement, aiming to challenge Canada's multicultural utopia image and show how police contribute to the marginalization of Black and Indigenous youth through criminalization.
