Association between Nephrotoxic Drug Combinations and Acute Kidney Injury in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Sara N. Salerno et al.

Summary: The study revealed that infants receiving longer durations of nephrotoxic combination therapy had an increased risk of developing acute kidney injury. Sepsis, lower baseline creatinine levels, and duration of therapy were associated with increased odds of AKI. Furosemide + tobramycin and vancomycin + piperacillin-tazobactam were found to have a decreased risk of AKI compared to gentamicin + indomethacin.

Amikacin or Vancomycin Exposure Alters the Postnatal Serum Creatinine Dynamics in Extreme Low Birth Weight Neonates

Tamara van Donge et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the impact of vancomycin and amikacin on renal function in neonates by modeling serum creatinine concentrations dynamically. Results showed that antibiotic exposure led to increased serum creatinine and transient decrease in creatinine clearance. The timing of exposure and gestational age also played a role in the extent of serum creatinine increase.

Dose-Related Adverse Drug Events in Neonates: Recognition and Assessment

Karel Allegaert et al.

Summary: This article discusses dose-related adverse events in neonates, including severity classification, signal detection, causality assessment, and severity evaluation. Challenges remain in accurately documenting causality in neonates using causality assessment tools, while the development of a neonatal severity-grading tool represents a significant advancement.
