Detection of ESBL and AmpC producing Klebsiella pneumoniae ST11 and ST147 from urinary tract infections in Iran

Shaghayegh Shahkolahi et al.

Summary: In this study, 200 Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were collected from patients with urinary tract infections in Tehran, Iran. The isolates were analyzed for antibiotic resistance, ESBLs, AmpCs, integron genes, plasmids, and genomic relatedness. The results showed high levels of resistance against ampicillin, with most isolates carrying beta-lactamase genes and the most prevalent integron being class I. The study also identified the replicons of plasmids and the ability of selected isolates to transfer genes. Finally, the isolates were categorized into pulsotypes and MLST identified sequence types.

Distribution of Pathogenicity Island Markers and H-Antigen Types ofEscherichia coliO25b/ST131 Isolates from Patients with Urinary Tract Infection in Iran

Masoumeh Rasoulinasab et al.

Summary: E. coliO25b/ST131, a multidrug-resistant organism with high virulence potential, is prevalent in UTI patients in Tehran, Iran. The O25b/ST131 isolates show higher prevalence of virulence genes and PAI markers compared to non-O25b/ST131 isolates. This clone poses a significant public health threat and further investigation is needed for understanding and controlling UTI in hospitals.

Summary: The study investigated the genetic relatedness, biofilm formation ability, and biofilm-related genes in UPEC isolated from hospital-and community-acquired UTI patients. Results showed that 99% of UPEC isolates demonstrated in vitro biofilm formation ability, with 27% of isolates being moderate to strong biofilm producers, and only the presence of the sfa/focDE gene was significantly associated with moderate and strong biofilm formation. Furthermore, there were higher genetic similarities among UPEC isolates of inpatients compared to outpatients.

The Challenge of Global Emergence of Novel Colistin-Resistant Escherichia coli ST131

Majid Taati Moghadam et al.

Summary: Escherichia coli ST131 is a high-risk multidrug-resistant clone with global distribution, posing a significant public health threat due to its ability to resist last-line antibiotics such as colistin. The resistance mechanisms to colistin include chromosomal mutations and plasmid-transmitted mcr genes. Further studies are needed to understand the evolution of this resistant organism for effective treatment strategies and antibiotic stewardship programs.

Colistin-Resistant mcr-1-Positive Escherichia coli ST131-H22 Carrying blaCTX-M-15 and qnrB19 in Agricultural Soil

Ralf Lopes et al.

Summary: The study investigated an E. coli strain isolated from a kale crop in Brazil, which exhibited multidrug resistance and carried resistance genes to clinically significant antimicrobials. This strain was phylogenetically related to human, avian, and swine ST131-H22 strains and presented a threat to food and environmental safety. The emergence of this E. coli strain in agricultural soil highlights the importance of One Health approach to detect and limit the spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular mechanisms involved in colistin resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii isolates from different clinical samples. The upregulation of the PmrAB two-component system was identified as the primary mechanism linked to colistin resistance among the studied isolates.

First detection of mobilized colistin resistance mcr-1 gene in Escherichia coli isolated from livestock and sewage in Iran

Summary: This study investigated the dissemination of mcr-harbouring Escherichia coli in livestock and sewage in Iran, identifying mcr-1 positive isolates and reporting the distribution of resistance genes. The findings suggest that most colistin-resistant E. coli are multidrug resistant, with no clonal relationship observed between isolates, highlighting the importance of monitoring these strains to control the spread of resistance genes to humans.
