Electronic Cigarette Use Promotes a Unique Periodontal Microbiome

Scott C. Thomas et al.

Summary: The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) is becoming increasingly popular and is often considered a healthier alternative to traditional smoking. However, there is limited evidence on the long-term effects of e-cig use on oral health. This study found that e-cig users have a unique periodontal microbiome, which shares some similarities with both conventional smokers and nonsmokers but has more in common with cigarette smokers. This suggests that there may be a unique periodontal risk associated with e-cig use.

A double-edged sword: Role of butyrate in the oral cavity and the gut

Xiaoyuan Guan et al.

Summary: Butyrate, a metabolite of anaerobic bacteria, plays crucial roles in the gut and oral cavity, influencing various diseases such as periodontitis. Despite its diverse functions in different organs, the impact of butyrate on different diseases provides valuable insights for further research.

E-cigarettes compromise the gut barrier and trigger inflammation

Aditi Sharma et al.

Summary: The study found that chronic use of nicotine-free e-cigarettes can increase gut inflammation and decrease the expression of tight junction proteins, while acute use does not have this effect. The non-nicotine components of e-cigarettes have harmful effects on the gut barrier, affecting host health and potentially leading to chronic diseases.

MiRKAT: kernel machine regression-based global association tests for the microbiome

Nehemiah Wilson et al.

Summary: MiRKAT enables distance-based association testing for microbiome beta diversity with various outcome types. Omnibus tests allow simultaneous consideration of multiple distance measures, providing higher power across different simulation scenarios. Two measures of effect size are incorporated to allow comparison of effect sizes across multiple kernels.
