Death of a Parent and the Risk of Ischemic Heart Disease and Stroke in Denmark and Sweden

Hua Chen et al.

Summary: Increasing evidence suggests that parental death is associated with unhealthy behaviors and mental ill-health. This cohort study found that parental death in the first decades of life was associated with an increased risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke, including cases of parental cardiovascular and other natural deaths as well as unnatural deaths. The risk increase was more pronounced when both parents had died.

Death of a child and the risk of atrial fibrillation: a nationwide cohort study in Sweden

Dang Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that parents who lost a child had a 15% higher risk of atrial fibrillation compared to parents who had not experienced such loss. The risk of atrial fibrillation increased not only when the child died from cardiovascular causes, but also in cases of other natural or unnatural causes of death. Additionally, the risk of atrial fibrillation was highest in the first week after the loss and remained elevated on the long term.
