Do climate change related factors modify the response of Mytilus galloprovincialis to lanthanum? The case of temperature rise

Madalena Andrade et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the relevance of temperature on the effects of lanthanum (La) in mussels. The results showed that temperature did not influence La bioaccumulation, but La exposure resulted in decreased metabolic capacity, enhanced biotransformation enzyme activity, and inhibited antioxidant defenses. Warming alone caused metabolic shutdown. The combined effects of La exposure and temperature rise led to metabolic depression, biotransformation defenses activation, reduced antioxidant capacity, and increased cellular damage in mussels.

UniProt: the universal protein knowledgebase in 2021

Alex Bateman et al.

Summary: The UniProt Knowledgebase aims to provide users with a comprehensive, high-quality set of protein sequences annotated with functional information. Updates over the past two years have increased the number of sequences to approximately 190 million, with new methods to assess proteome completeness and quality. UniProtKB has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by expertly curating relevant entries and making them rapidly available through a dedicated portal.

Common irrigation drivers of freshwater salinisation in river basins worldwide

Josefin Thorslund et al.

Summary: A study assessing freshwater salinity patterns across seven regional river basins globally found that many sub-basins temporarily exceeded safe irrigation water-use thresholds and 57% showed increasing salinisation trends. Investigation revealed that agricultural activities are common contributors in areas with high salinity levels and increasing salinisation trends.
