The Palliative Care in the Metastatic Spinal Tumors. A Systematic Review on the Radiotherapy and Surgical Perspective

Giuseppe Roberto Giammalva et al.

Summary: Spine is the most common site for metastatic disease involvement, and its therapeutic management poses challenges due to the close relationship with the spinal cord. Metastatic spinal cord disease can lead to neurological sequelae, significantly impacting the quality of life in patients with limited life expectancy. The most updated palliative care has a positive impact on spinal metastases.

Can We Reliably Identify the Pathological Outcomes of Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in Patients with Breast Cancer? Development and Validation of a Logistic Regression Nomogram Based on Preoperative Factors

Jian Zhang et al.

Summary: A nomogram was developed to predict the ORR of NCT in breast cancer patients. The nomogram showed good calibration and discrimination, with an optimal ORR cut-off value of 0.646 for patients who are operable and have an ORR < 0.646, suggesting limited benefits of NCT and direct surgery treatment.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in African American cancer survivors: Risk factors and quality of life outcomes

Matthew R. Trendowski et al.

Summary: This study focused on identifying non-genetic risk factors and comorbidities associated with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in African American cancer survivors. The results showed that hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, history of depression, diabetes, and higher BMI were positively associated with CIPN, while alcohol consumption and tobacco use did not increase CIPN risk. The study also found that CIPN status was significantly associated with decreased quality of life and mood in African American cancer survivors.

A prediction model of health-related quality of life in young adult patients with stroke

Susie Yoon et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish and test a predictive model explaining the health-related quality of life of young adult stroke patients. The results showed that variables such as stroke severity, social support, depression, fear of stroke recurrence, physical function disability, and general health perception are related to the health-related quality of life of these patients. Nurses should develop detailed nursing interventions considering these factors for better clinical practice.

Summary: The study compared the impact of different treatment regimens on quality of life in elderly patients with HER2-positive breast cancer. Results showed that in some aspects, monotherapy with trastuzumab was associated with significant improvement compared to chemotherapy at 2 and 12 months, but no significant differences were observed at 36 months.

Summary: High BMI, young age, and male sex were found to be protective factors against HRQoL deterioration in metastatic colorectal cancer patients. In centers where HRQoL assessment is not routine, such assessment should be considered for mCRC patients who meet the risk criteria outlined in the proposed nomogram (i.e., females over 65 years old with BMI < 23).

Summary: The study aimed to investigate adverse drug reactions (ADRs) caused by anticancer therapy and assess quality of life in cancer patients. The results showed that nausea and vomiting were the most common ADRs, with gastrointestinal tract being the most affected system. Most ADRs were categorized as probable and many patients recovered from the ADRs. QoL was higher in females and the 40-49 age group, with an overall improvement in QoL during the second visit.
