Sodium/hydrogen-exchanger-2 modulates colonocyte lineage differentiation

Katerina Nikolovska et al.

Summary: NHE2 plays an important role in colonic epithelial cell proliferation, differentiation, and electrolyte transport by regulating intracellular pH and enterocyte differentiation. Lack of NHE2 leads to abnormal colonic epithelial cell differentiation with increased expression of secretory lineage markers and decreased expression of absorptive lineage markers, which may result in inflammation and altered fluid absorptive rate.
