Estimating patient health in prostate cancer treatment counseling

Gregory T. Chesnut et al.

Summary: This study assessed the concordance among urologists' judgment of health quartiles and compared the life expectancy and treatment recommendations based on different prediction models for patients with localized prostate cancer. The findings suggest that the method based on physician-assessed health quartiles, as suggested by the NCCN guidelines, is too crude and a more accurate prediction model is needed.

Development and validation of a life expectancy calculator for US patients with prostate cancer

Elizabeth C. Chase et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop and validate a prediction model for other-cause mortality (OCM) in patients with prostate cancer in the United States. The model was based on two national cohorts and showed good predictive performance, accommodating for various factors such as race, education, and marital status. The variability in life expectancy cannot be captured solely by age.
