Systematic and quantitative analysis of two decades of anodic wastewater treatment in bioelectrochemical reactors

Florence de Fouchecour et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment is a challenge for next-generation plants due to its energy-intensive processes. Bioelectrochemical systems (BES) have gained attention for their ability to utilize the energy in wastewater and produce useful products. However, comparing results and improving efficiency is difficult due to various parameters and the variability of real wastewater. A systematic review of 1,073 articles and 4,579 observations suggests that BES has shown satisfactory treatment capacity, but there is room for improvement in coulombic efficiency.

Effect of tetracycline on bio-electrochemically assisted anaerobic methanogenic systems: Process performance, microbial community structure, and functional genes

Sha Long et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of tetracycline (TC) on bio-electrochemically assisted anaerobic methanogenic systems (An-BES) for wastewater treatment. The results showed that TC had minimal effect on methane production at low concentrations, but significantly reduced methane production and current output at high concentrations. TC was predominantly removed through adsorption, and the application of voltage enhanced its removal. The electrode biofilms had higher abundance of propionate oxidizing bacteria and methanogens, while antibiotic resistance genes were less abundant compared to suspended cultures. TC inhibited certain functional microorganisms and pathways, leading to decreased performance of An-BES systems.
