Employing micro-aeration in anaerobic digestion of poultry litter and wheat straw: Batch kinetics and continuous performance

Yuanhang Zhan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different micro-aeration (MA) strategies on anaerobic digestion (AD) of poultry litter and wheat straw. Daily MA during batch AD of wheat straw resulted in the highest increase (16.5%) in cumulative methane yield compared to the control. Daily MA during co-digestion of wheat straw and poultry litter further improved the methane yield by 15.1%. The results support the feasibility of applying micro-aeration in the AD of agricultural wastes.

In-situ microaeration of anaerobic digester treating buffalo manure for enhanced biogas yield

Iftikhar Zeb et al.

Summary: Microaeration pretreatment can enhance lignin degradation and biogas production of lignocellulosic biomass during anaerobic digestion. A suitable combination of aeration dose, contact time, and frequency was determined through a serial approach in buffalo manure, with the best results achieved at 12-hour contact time with a single injection of 7.3 mL O-2/g VS, leading to significant improvement in biogas yield.

Understanding the mechanisms behind micro-aeration to enhance anaerobic digestion of corn straw

Rong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of micro-aeration on the anaerobic digestion process and comprehensively analyzed the factors influencing substrate degradation, intermediate products, electron-transfer capacity, key enzymes, and microbial communities. The results showed that micro-aeration had a positive impact on anaerobic digestion, with the beneficial effects being dependent on the oxygen intensity.

The effects of micro-aeration on semi-continued anaerobic digestion of corn straw with increasing organic loading rates

Rong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of micro-aeration on semi-continous AD of corn straw at different organic loading rates (OLRs). It confirmed the beneficial effects of micro-aeration, including increased methane yields and stimulation of facultative bacteria growth. The study also unraveled the mechanisms behind these effects, including the secretion of critical enzymes and the promotion of direct interspecies electron transfer.

Facilitating Digester Recovery from Acid Inhibition at High Organic Load Rates by Limited Calcium Peroxide Addition

Wenjing Tian et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of limited CaO2 addition in maintaining the stability of anaerobic digestion, and found that it significantly reduced VFA concentration, restored pH levels, and enhanced methane production. It also promoted VFA level control and the growth of acetotrophic and hydrogenotrophic methanogeneses.

Understanding the mechanisms behind enhanced anaerobic digestion of corn straw by humic acids

Rong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of humic acids (HAs) on the anaerobic digestion (AD) of corn straw and identified the mechanisms behind. The results showed that higher HA content benefited the AD process, increasing methane yield, production rate, and shortening lag phase time. Microbial community analysis suggested that HAs promoted the degradation of volatile fatty acids and had a positive impact on the AD process.

Effects of micro-aeration on microbial niches and antimicrobial resistances in blackwater anaerobic digesters

Bing Guo et al.

Summary: This study explored the impact of different micro-aeration dosages on anaerobic digestion of blackwater. Results showed that low oxygen dosages led to higher methane production efficiency, while high oxygen dosages resulted in more volatile fatty acids accumulation. Microbial communities and antimicrobial resistance genes were also affected by the oxygen dosages, indicating the potential for controlling ARG profiles through micro-aeration in AD processes.

Intermittent air mixing system for anaerobic digestion of animal wastewater: Operating conditions and full-scale validation

Hongnan Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that the appropriate conditions for air mixing in anaerobic digestion were 66.7 mL air per volume of reactor per min with a mixing time of 1.5 min. Exceeding 3 min of air mixing time led to a decrease in total CH4 production. The feasibility of air mixing in a full-scale anaerobic plant was validated through one year of operating data with swine wastewater.
