Enhanced metronidazole removal by binary-species photoelectrogenic biofilm of microaglae and anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria

Xubin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the application of electrochemistry activated binary-species photosynthetic biofilm for enhancing the removal of metronidazole (MNZ) from wastewater. The results show that external potentials significantly accelerate MNZ removal, and the binary-species biofilm exhibits higher removal rate compared to single-species biofilms due to enhanced metabolic interaction. The accumulation of certain compounds and substances in the biofilm contributes to the accelerated degradation of MNZ.

Optimization of whole-cell immobilization system constructed with two-species microorganism and its ability of tetracycline wastewater treatment

X. Wu et al.

Summary: Microbial technology, specifically using Bacillus cereus strains, combined with fungal immobilization, showed high efficiency in degrading tetracycline and removing it from contaminated water. The combination of inactivated Penicillium chrysogenumY5 as the immobilization skeleton and inoculated Bacillus cereus at the logarithmic growth phase proved to be the optimal condition for achieving a high percentage of COD degradation and tetracycline removal. Adsorption of Bacillus cereus cells on the fungus surface and the presence of hydroxyl, carbonyl, carboxyl and amino groups in the immobilization pellets were key factors contributing to the success of tetracycline removal from wastewater.

Pilot-scale evaluation of partial denitrification/anammox on nitrogen removal from low COD/N real sewage based on a modified process

Qi Zhao et al.

Summary: The nitrogen removal performance of a pilot-scale biosystem was significantly improved by implementing partial denitrification/anammox (PD/A) in real sewage with low COD/N ratio. Inoculating biocarriers into anaerobic and anoxic zones enhanced anammox and nitrogen removal performance. The anoxic unit served as the PD/A hotspot, enriched with Ca. Brocadia and partial denitrification functional groups in the biofilms, contributing to 34.1% of total nitrogen removal.
