Ion Channels as New Attractive Targets to Improve Re-Myelination Processes in the Brain

Federica Cherchi et al.

Summary: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a typical demyelinating disease of the central nervous system characterized by neuroinflammation. Oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) can migrate to lesion sites and differentiate into mature oligodendrocytes under demyelinating conditions. Ion channels are considered attractive therapeutic targets, modulation of which can ameliorate MS symptoms.

High-affinity P2Y2 and low-affinity P2X7 receptor interaction modulates ATP-mediated calcium signaling in murine osteoblasts

Nicholas Mikolajewicz et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated conserved features in the P2-mediated Ca2+ responses to ATP, showing that cells transition from transient to oscillatory to transient Ca2+ responses with increasing ATP concentrations, and identified P2Y2 and P2X7 receptors as key contributors to these responses. The study also constructed a mathematical model to study the system and found that P2Y2 activity may alter the kinetics of P2X7 towards favoring naive state activation.
