Nature of Asymmetric Electron Transfer in the Symmetric Pathways of Photosystem I

Koji Mitsuhashi et al.

Summary: This study reports the origin of A-branch electron transfer in Photosystem I, focusing on the electronic coupling between pigments and the electrostatic interaction with protein environments. The asymmetry of electron-transfer activity is found to originate from P-A as a chlorophyll epimer.

Spectral Tuning Mechanism of Photosynthetic Light-Harvesting Complex II Revealed by Ab Initio Dimer Exciton Model

Kazuhiro J. Fujimoto et al.

Summary: This study theoretically investigates excited states of two types of bacteriochlorophyll aggregates in photosynthetic light-harvesting complexes, revealing that the spectral redshift of B800 is mainly due to electrostatic interaction while that of B850 is attributed to excitonic coupling. Additionally, interchromophore charge transfer plays a crucial role in the spectral redshift of B850.

The origin of unidirectional charge separation in photosynthetic reaction centers: nonadiabatic quantum dynamics of exciton and charge in pigment-protein complexes

Hiroyuki Tamura et al.

Summary: Unidirectional charge separation in PbRC and PSII is elucidated using nonadiabatic quantum dynamics calculations and time-dependent density functional theory with a QM/MM/PCM method. In PbRC, Tyr-M210 near the accessary bacteriochlorophyll reduces the energy of the intermediate state and accelerates charge separation, while in PSII, charge separation in the inactive branch is prevented by a weak electronic coupling due to symmetry-breaking of the chlorophyll configurations. Excitons in the inactive branch of PSII can be transferred to the active branch via direct and indirect pathways.
