EF24, a schistosomicidal curcumin analog: Insights from its synthesis and phenotypic, biochemical and cytotoxic activities

Fernanda R. Badoco et al.

Summary: This study synthesized and evaluated the schistosomicidal, biochemical, and cytotoxic activities of EF24, a synthetic curcumin analog, against different isolates of Schistosoma mansoni. The results showed that EF24 exhibited potent schistosomicidal activity against both schistosomula and adult worms, with higher efficacy than Praziquantel. It also demonstrated selective cytotoxicity against the parasite compared to mammalian host cells. These findings suggest EF24 as a potential candidate for the treatment of schistosomiasis.

Antibacterial activity of a new monocarbonyl analog of curcumin MAC 4 is associated with divisome disruption

Carlos R. Polaquini et al.

Summary: This study synthesized a series of unsymmetrical MACs analogs, among which phenolic MACs 4, 6, and 8 exhibited potent antibacterial activity, especially against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Acinetobacter baumannii, and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The investigation on human lung cell toxicity revealed that MAC 4 showed greater selectivity. Additionally, MAC 4 demonstrated better stability in phosphate buffer at pH 7.4 compared to CUR.

Should the enzyme name 'rhodesain' be discontinued?

Dietmar Steverding et al.

Summary: The term Rhodesain for the cathepsin L-like peptidase of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense has a negative connotation due to its association with Cecil Rhodes. It is suggested to change the name to TbrCATL to avoid this negative association, while the previously used term 'brucipain' could also be considered.
