Tradeoff between Amino Group and Crystallinity of Chitin Nanocrystals as a Functional Component in Fluorescent Nail Coatings

Mengqin Zhou et al.

Summary: Chitin nanocrystals (ChNC) are highly crystalline nano-objects found in fungi and shellfish exoskeletons, which have great potential for various applications. In this study, we successfully obtained amino groups on the surface of ChNC through acid hydrolysis and further modified them with fluorescence. The fluorescent-modified ChNC was used as a multifunctional additive in a waterborne polyurethane-based nail polish coating, demonstrating remarkable performance.

Effect of Graft Molecular Weight and Density on the Mechanical Properties of Polystyrene-Grafted Cellulose Nanocrystal Films

James H. Lettow et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of polymer-grafted nanoparticle films were investigated in relation to the polymer brush conformation, with fracture toughness maximized in samples with the grafted polymer in the SDPB or CPD/SDPB regime. Optimizing for both rubbery modulus and fracture toughness requires polymers in the SDPB regime and CNC loading levels that are difficult to attain in more traditional two-component CNC composites.

Strong, Multifaceted Guanidinium-Based Adhesion of Bioorganic Nanoparticles to Wet Biological Tissue

Lam Tan Hao et al.

Summary: A biomedical adhesive with biocompatible, hemostatic, and antibacterial properties has been developed, which can effectively glue wet biological tissues with strong and stable adhesion. This adhesive exhibits 3000-fold stronger adhesion compared to inorganic nanoparticles, instant adhesion on wet surfaces, and is sprayable and convenient to store. The nanomechanic study reveals that the adhesion mechanism involves strong, multifaceted noncovalent bonds created by chaotropic guanidinium moieties.
