Applying alternating rigid-and-soft interphase into functionalized graphene oxide/epoxy nanocomposites toward enhanced mechanical properties

Jie Fan et al.

Summary: Inspired by the structure of nacre, researchers constructed a rigid-and-soft multilayer interphase between functionalized graphene oxide (GO) and an epoxy matrix. The nanocomposites with three layers of PDA/D230 on modified GO showed the highest mechanical properties, with an increase of 25.8% in tensile strength at room temperature and 13.0% in elongation at break.

Comparison of toughening mechanisms in natural silk-reinforced composites with three epoxy resin matrices

Kang Yang et al.

Summary: Natural silk fibre can enhance the toughness and impact strength of composites when reinforced in polymer matrices, with the epoxy resin derived from bisphenol-A epoxy and aliphatic diamine precursors showing the highest performance in terms of tensile breaking energy and impact strength. The toughening mechanisms in these composites are mainly crack propagation and fiber pull-out, regardless of whether the matrix is brittle or ductile. The study aims to provide guidelines for designing matrices in silk fibre-reinforced plastics with optimal toughness by identifying key toughening mechanisms.

Surface modification of silk fibroin composite bone scaffold with polydopamine coating to enhance mineralization ability and biological activity for bone tissue engineering

Caixing Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, silk fibroin-octacalcium phosphate composite was combined with silk fibroin by freeze-drying technology, and the freeze-dried scaffolds were further surface-modified with self-polymerization by using dopamine. The polydopamine coating enhanced the compressive strength of the scaffold, delayed the degradation rate, and promoted apatite deposition. It showed excellent bioactivity in co-culture with MC3T3-E1 cells.

Effects of chain length of polyether amine on interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber/epoxy composite in the absence or presence of polydopamine bridging platform

Qing Wu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that longer chain polyether amine encourages molecular interlocking with epoxy molecules, resulting in higher penetration depth and increased IFSS. In the presence of PDA, IFSS increase is mainly attributed to hybrid interfacial interactions and enhanced interphase rigidity.
