Roles of hemocyte subpopulations in silver nanoparticle transformation and toxicity in the oysters Crassostrea hongkongensis

Summary: This study investigated the different immune responses of oyster hemocyte subpopulations to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The results showed that AgNPs could rapidly enter the oyster hemocytes, causing different immune responses in different cell subtypes. The most affected cell subtype was granulocytes, followed by semigranulocytes, while agranulocytes were not affected. AgNPs also induced granule formation in semigranulocytes and increased the proportion of granulocytes. The dissolved Ag ions accumulated in lysosomes, leading to lysosomal dysfunction and impaired immunity system in oysters. This study provides insights into the immune responses of oyster hemocyte subpopulations to AgNPs and their ecotoxicological risks in aquatic systems.

The altered gene expression profile indicates a modulated immune status of the test organism, although no adverse effects were observed under the given conditions. Accumulation, speciation and localization of silver nanoparticles in the earthworm Eisenia fetida
