Ecology-inspired resilient and affordable system of systems using degree of system order

Abheek Chatterjee et al.

Summary: This research investigates whether ecological principles and the DoSO metric are useful for designing resilient and affordable SoS. Results show that the majority of Pareto optimal SoS architectures, under various disruptions, lie in the favorable DoSO range identified ecologically, and tend to have better resilience and affordability attributes compared to architectures outside this range. The DoSO evaluation does not require knowledge of disruption scenarios and is the first network architecture metric to consider resilience versus affordability trade-offs, making it a valuable addition to the SoS engineering toolset.

Global optimisation in Hilbert spaces using the survival of the fittest algorithm

Andrew Yu Morozov et al.

Summary: Global optimisation problems in high-dimensional and infinite-dimensional spaces are common in various real-world applications, with bio-inspired methods being popular due to their efficiency in practical studies. However, these methods may have drawbacks such as non-guaranteed convergence and slow convergence in higher dimensional spaces. A new bio-inspired algorithm, Survival of the Fittest Algorithm (SoFA), is proposed in this study for global stochastic optimisation in Hilbert function spaces, showing better performance in fitness maximisation in high-dimensional spaces.

Finite-difference Time-domain (FDTD) Optical Simulations: A Primer for the Life Sciences and Bio-Inspired Engineering

Dakota E. McCoy et al.

Summary: Light plays a significant role in influencing ecosystems and organisms on Earth, with biologists studying nano- and micro-scale adaptations to manipulate light and explore how it interacts with objects using sophisticated microscopy and spectroscopy. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is commonly used to simulate light interacting with various materials, optical devices, and natural adaptations such as camouflage in organisms or photosynthetic efficiency in plants. FDTD simulations in biology help characterize optical adaptations, provide mechanistic explanations, make conclusions about evolutionary theory, and inspire new technologies based on natural structures.

On the Evaluation of a Novel Hypoxic 3D Pancreatic Cancer Model as a Tool for Radiotherapy Treatment Screening

Gabrielle Wishart et al.

Summary: Pancreatic cancer poses global health challenges due to non-specific symptoms, low survival rates, and treatment resistance. Tissue engineering is developing animal-free systems to replicate tumor tissue-specific hallmarks and cancer microenvironments for more accurate preclinical assessment of treatment strategies. Specifically, the complex tumor microenvironment of pancreatic cancer plays a significant role in treatment resistance, and new technologies are being developed to mimic these intricate ecosystems for improved therapeutic avenues.
