Profiling and functional characterization of maternal mRNA translation during mouse maternal-to-zygotic transition

Chunxia Zhang et al.

Summary: Transcriptional regulation is important in early mouse embryo development. Using a new technique, the mRNA translation landscape of mouse preimplantation embryos was revealed, showing the critical role of active translation of maternal mRNAs in maternal-to-zygotic transition. The study also identified two maternal factors required for chromatin reprogramming and zygotic genome activation.

Sperm-inherited H3K27me3 epialleles are transmitted transgenerationally in cis

Kiyomi Raye Kaneshiro et al.

Summary: The transmission of chromatin states from parent cells to daughter cells is important for preserving cell identity. A study on Caenorhabditis elegans showed that alleles inherited without a specific chromatin mark were more likely to be up-regulated in offspring cells, and the tissue context played a role in determining which genes were up-regulated. This study also demonstrated the transgenerational epigenetic transmission of chromatin states in C. elegans.

Regulation of translation by methylation multiplicity of 18S rRNA

Kuanqing Liu et al.

Summary: N-6-methyladenosine (m(6)A) is a conserved ribonucleoside modification that regulates RNA metabolism. This study found that tandem adenosines at the 3' end of 18S rRNA are also methylated, with significantly increased levels in response to sulfur starvation. Ribosomes with m(6)A were shown to have distinct translation preferences for sulfur metabolism genes.
