Summary: This study investigates the signaling pathway of activated angiotensin type-2 receptors (AT(2)R) and its role in inhibiting sodium ion reabsorption in renal proximal tubule cells. Extracellular vimentin is an attachment factor that facilitates SARS-CoV-2 entry into human endothelial cells

Summary: Vimentin (VIM) is identified as an important attachment factor for SARS-CoV-2 on human endothelial cells. Exogenous VIM binds to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and facilitates viral infection. Co-expression of VIM increases SARS-CoV-2 entry in HEK-293 cells, while knockdown of VIM reduces virus infection in human endothelial cells. In addition, binding of VIM with the CR3022 antibody inhibits viral entry, suggesting a key role for VIM in SARS-CoV-2 infection of endothelial cells.

Angiotensin II Promotes SARS-CoV-2 Infection via Upregulation of ACE2 in Human Bronchial Cells

Ilaria Caputo et al.

Summary: Blockers of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) can increase the expression of ACE2, the cellular receptor of SARS-CoV-2, and thus increase the risk of COVID-19. This study found that angiotensin II (Ang II) significantly increased the levels of ACE2 expression by acting on the angiotensin type 1 receptor, resulting in enhanced viral entry into cells. However, the blockade of ACE-1-mediated Ang II formation and ACE2-mediated Ang II conversion did not have any effect. Therefore, increased production of Ang II in patients with an activated RAS may lead to a greater spread of COVID-19 infection in lung cells.

However, there was a significant inverse relationship between blood pressure and time since COVID-19 diagnosis (i.e., higher blood pressure with more recent infection).
