Origin and early evolution of the plant terpene synthase family

Qidong Jia et al.

Summary: As a midsized gene family conserved more by lineage than function, typical plant terpene synthases (TPSs) have been studied to learn about plant evolution. Systematic analysis shows that TPS family originated after land plants diverged from charophytic algae. The ancestral TPS gene was bifunctional and produced ent-kaurene required for phytohormone production. Duplication of the ancestral TPS gene early in land plant evolution resulted in three TPS lineages, with two dedicated to ent-kaurene production and the remaining one involved in secondary metabolism.

Genome-Wide Identification and Analysis of Small Nucleolar RNAs and Their Roles in Regulating Latex Regeneration in the Rubber Tree (Hevea brasiliensis)

Xiang Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, snoRNAs in rubber trees were globally identified using RNA-seq, with 50 highly expressed in latex and 13 positively correlated with yield. A novel insulated tapping system was developed to measure latex regenerated in specific laticifers, revealing a laticifer-abundant snoRNA, HbsnoR28, highly correlated with latex regeneration. This is the first report to identify snoRNAs potentially involved in regulating latex regeneration and provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying this process.

Genome-Wide Analysis of Terpene Synthase Gene Family in Mentha longifolia and Catalytic Activity Analysis of a Single Terpene Synthase

Zequn Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, the TPS gene family in Mentha longifolia was genome-wide identified and analyzed. A total of 63 TPS genes were identified, which could be divided into six subfamilies. The TPS-b subfamily had the largest number of genes, and the TPS-e subfamily showed significant species-specific expansion in M. longifolia compared to other Lamiaceae plant species.

Assembly-Line Catalysis in Bifunctional Terpene Synthases

Jacque L. Faylo et al.

Summary: The chemodiversity of terpenoid natural products is largely attributed to the catalysis of prenyltransferases and cyclases, which generate complex hydrocarbon compounds through chain elongation reactions. Terpene cyclization reactions are characterized by changes in chemical bonding of substrate carbon atoms, with different classes of cyclases based on the chemistry of carbocation formation.

Highly accurate protein structure prediction with AlphaFold

John Jumper et al.

Summary: Proteins are essential for life, and accurate prediction of their structures is a crucial research problem. Current experimental methods are time-consuming, highlighting the need for accurate computational approaches to address the gap in structural coverage. Despite recent progress, existing methods fall short of atomic accuracy in protein structure prediction.
