Varenicline improved laparotomy-induced cognitive impairment by restoring mitophagy in aged mice

Jianan Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that laparotomy in aged mice caused persistent cognitive impairment and anxiety. This impairment may be associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and dysregulated autophagy. The study also found that chronic varenicline administration improved cognitive impairment in these mice.

An in vivo accelerated developmental myelination model for testing promyelinating therapeutics

Karen Lariosa-Willingham et al.

Summary: In this study, a rat model treated with T4 was used to evaluate the effects on early postnatal development. The results showed increased fractional anisotropy and myelin basic protein expression levels, indicating accelerated myelination. This model provides a rapid method for testing the effectiveness of promyelinating compounds in vivo.

Cerebellar Pathology in an Inducible Mouse Model of Friedreich Ataxia

Elizabeth Mercado-Ayon et al.

Summary: FRDA is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by deficiency of the mitochondrial protein frataxin, leading to synaptic degeneration in the cerebellum. Knockdown of frataxin results in loss of cerebellar neurons, which can be partially reversed by frataxin restoration through gene transfer.

Dexmedetomidine improves postoperative neurocognitive disorder after cardiopulmonary bypass in rats

Zhiwei Gao et al.

Summary: The study investigated whether dexmedetomidine could improve postoperative neurocognitive function after cardiopulmonary bypass in rats. Results showed that dexmedetomidine reduced apoptosis, inhibited inflammation, and decreased microglia activation, leading to an improvement in cognitive deficits identified in the control group.

Cortical VIP+/ChAT+ interneurons: From genetics to function

Amir Dudai et al.

Summary: The urgent task of neuroscience is to understand how neuronal circuits operate, what causes them to fail, and how they can be repaired. This review focuses on a specific type of cortical neurons marked by the expression of VIP and ChAT, which can release both GABA and ACh. Despite their sparse population, these neurons may have a significant impact on cortical circuit function.

Diffusion MRI detects basal forebrain cholinergic abnormalities in the 3xTg-AD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease

Maria Fatima Falangola et al.

Summary: This study found significant differences in dMRI values in the BF of 2-month-old 3xTg-AD mice compared to normal control mice, as well as age-related changes between 2 and 8 months, including a decrease in fractional anisotropy and axial diffusivity, and an increase in radial kurtosis. These dMRI changes likely reflect the complex aging and pathological microstructural changes described in this region, and could serve as potential in vivo biomarkers for AD disease progression.

CORM-3 exerts a neuroprotective effect in a rodent model of traumatic brain injury via the bidirectional gut-brain interactions

Li-Min Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the protective effects of CORM-3 against TBI-induced gastrointestinal inflammation by reducing pyroptosis, improving gut and brain injuries, enhancing learning/memory and exploratory behavior, and alleviating anxiety-like behaviors. The anti-inflammatory effects of CORM-3 may lead to improved late outcomes after brain injury.

Object recognition and Morris water maze to detect cognitive impairment from mild hippocampal damage in rats: A reflection based on the literature and experience

Lilian Juliana Lissner et al.

Summary: Object recognition (OR) and the Morris water maze (MWM) are classical tasks used to assess memory parameters in rodents, involving hippocampus and prefrontal cortex connections. Despite controversy, these tests offer practical tools for evaluating hippocampal-related memory deficits in rats, with minimal manageable stressful conditions.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction is made persistent with morphine treatment in aged rats

Stephanie M. Muscat et al.

Summary: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a collection of cognitive impairments experienced by individuals following surgery, with persistent POCD most commonly affecting older individuals. In a study on aged rats, it was found that postsurgical treatment with morphine led to long-term memory impairments through a neuroinflammatory mechanism rather than pain modulation. Central blockade of IL-1b signaling completely prevented the memory impairment in rats, suggesting a potential target for future treatment discoveries.

The Correlation of Reduced Fractional Anisotropy in the Cingulum With Suicide Risk in Bipolar Disorder

Fangfang Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigated alterations in brain white matter integrity in individuals with bipolar disorder who had attempted suicide using a TBSS approach. The findings suggest that the hippocampal cingulum may be the neurobiological basis of suicide attempts, and the illness duration of patients with attempted suicide may affect white matter integrity in certain brain regions.

TNF-α-mediated peripheral and central inflammation are associated with increased incidence of PND in acute postoperative pain

Yu-fan Zhao et al.

Summary: Acute postoperative pain exacerbates perioperative neurocognitive disorders in elderly rats, potentially through peripheral and central nervous system inflammation. Postoperative analgesia, particularly with morphine, can significantly improve cognitive impairment caused by acute postoperative pain.Reducing the intensity of acute postoperative pain is suggested as a key preventive strategy for PND.
