Cooperative breeding and the emergence of multilevel societies in birds

Ettore Camerlenghi et al.

Summary: Multilevel societies are considered one of the most complex forms of animal societies, with most research focusing on mammals. This study proposes that multilevel societies could also be common in cooperatively breeding birds, and provides evidence through comparing and analyzing bird species in Australia and New Zealand.

Male White-shouldered Fairywrens (Malurus alboscapulatus) elevate androgens greater when courting females than during territorial challenges

Jordan Boersma et al.

Summary: Androgens like testosterone mediate suites of physical and behavioral traits across vertebrates, and the variations in circulating testosterone levels are influenced by agonistic interactions between males and male-female interactions, depending on the species.

The importance of individual-to-society feedbacks in animal ecology and evolution

Mauricio Cantor et al.

Summary: The social decisions individuals make shape social structure, which in turn determines how individuals interact with their environment. However, there is a lack of research linking the perspectives on individual social decisions and the impact of social structure on social processes. This review identifies well-studied areas and highlights the disconnection between the two perspectives in social structure research. By synthesizing existing research, new prospects are identified where the interplay between social structure and social processes can reveal new dimensions to old questions in ecology and evolution.

Social and abiotic factors differentially affect plumage ornamentation of young and old males in an Australian songbird

Joseph F. Welklin et al.

Summary: The study found that for young male red-backed fairy-wrens, social cues appear to play a larger role than abiotic environmental factors in determining ornament acquisition. Conversely, for older males, the timing of ornamented plumage acquisition is constrained by rainfall and physiological factors rather than social cues. Sexual signal expression can vary with age due to different forms of signal variation influenced by social cues in young individuals and abiotic environmental variation in older individuals.

Social network position predicts male mating success in a small passerine

Summary: The study showed that male positioning within their social environment prior to breeding can affect future mating success, adding an important new dimension to studies of (extrapair) mating behavior.
