The First Characterization of Fog Microphysics in the United Arab Emirates, an Arid Region on the Arabian Peninsula

Michael Weston et al.

Summary: The study conducted the first measurements of fog microphysics in the arid region of the United Arab Emirates, revealing the meteorological conditions and microphysics characteristics of fog formation. The results showed a bimodal size distribution of cloud droplets, with droplet growth observed during the mature stage, suggesting both collision/coalescence and condensation processes were involved in droplet growth.

Climatology of the heat low and the intertropical discontinuity in the Arabian Peninsula

Ricardo Fonseca et al.

Summary: This study investigates the climatological state and seasonal variability of the Arabian heat low (AHL) and the intertropical discontinuity (ITD) over the Arabian Peninsula using ERA-5 reanalysis data from 1979 to 2019. The results show that AHL has strengthened in line with the increase in surface temperature, while ITD exhibits a noticeable northward shift in the summer months.

Effects of Atlantic multidecadal oscillation and Pacific decadal oscillation on interdecadal variability of fog frequency in autumn-winter season in Southwest China

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: Research shows that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation have significant impacts on the fog frequency in Southwest China during autumn-winter. Abnormally cold conditions in the North Atlantic and North Pacific lead to higher fog frequency in the region, while the instability of the atmosphere is influenced by Rossby wave train propagation and Siberian high-pressure anomalies. The movement of cold air from Northern China modulates water vapor, temperature, and humidity, resulting in water vapor supersaturation in the lower atmosphere of Southwest China.

Increased Shamal winds and dust activity over the Arabian Peninsula during the COVID-19 lockdown period in 2020

Diana Francis et al.

Summary: Although anthropogenic pollutants have decreased during the lockdown, particulate matter (PM) concentrations did not show the same trend. In the eastern Arabian Peninsula, PM concentrations actually increased by 30% compared to the same period in previous years. This was due to the influence of desert dust storms and increased long-range transport of aerosols.

Atmospheric rivers fueling the intensification of fog and haze over Indo-Gangetic Plains

Shivali Verma et al.

Summary: The Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) experience persistent and widespread fog and haze during the winter season, which is attributed to the rise in pollution levels and water vapor. This study detects moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea, known as atmospheric rivers (AR), which intermittently land-fall along the west coast of India during winter. These AR events significantly enhance water vapor over the IGP region, fueling the intensification of fog and haze through aerosol-water vapor interaction. The study also finds that the moist-laden winds in ARs contribute to precipitation in the Himalayan Mountains, explaining the observed rise in western Himalayan river flow during winter.

Characterization of the atmospheric circulation near the Empty Quarter Desert during major weather events

Narendra Nelli et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the meteorological conditions and planetary boundary layer dynamics in western United Arab Emirates based on 2012-2020 in-situ measurements. The findings indicate that wind speeds are generally below 5 m/s at 10 meters and 8 m/s at 60 meters, predominantly blowing from a northerly direction. The wind intensity peaks during specific times of the day due to the sea-breeze and the downward mixing of momentum from the nighttime low-level jet. The study also highlights the occurrence of radiation fog, sea fog, and convective clouds, as well as the influence of dust storms on aerosol optical depth.

On the analysis of a summertime convective event in a hyperarid environment

Diana Francis et al.

Summary: This study investigates a summertime convective event that developed over the United Arab Emirates on 5 September 2017. Using a combination of ground-based, satellite, and in situ data, the study found that the convection was triggered by the interaction of maritime and terrestrial air masses. The event was simulated using different input datasets, with the Global Forecast System (GFS) generally demonstrating higher skill scores in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model simulations.

The atmospheric controls of extreme convective events over the southern Arabian Peninsula during the spring season

Narendra Reddy Nelli et al.

Summary: Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCSs) over the southern Arabian Peninsula are more common during the spring months of March and April. This study investigated the processes behind such severe convective events using different data sources, and found that they are triggered by low-level wind convergence and moisture advection. The study also revealed the environmental conditions and mesoscale changes during MCS events.

Anthropogenic aerosols prolong fog lifetime in China

Jiannong Quan et al.

Summary: Long-term measurements in China show that increases in aerosol levels and global warming have opposite effects on fog lifetime; aerosols primarily prolong fog lifetime by delaying fog dissipation, while warming decreases fog lifetime by delaying fog formation. The overall aerosol effect on fog lifetime in China is dominant, particularly in the highly polluted regions of Eastern China.

Summary: This study investigated an intermittent fog event over Newfoundland using the WRF model and PAFOG model, introducing a new approach to simulate intermittent fog phenomena. Results showed that using advection terms calculated from ERA5 can better simulate intermittent fog, providing a low-cost method for detailed study of fog/stratus.
