Multi-factor reconciliation of discrepancies in ozone-precursor sensitivity retrieved from observation- and emission-based models

Danni Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the core factors leading to discrepancies in ozone precursors (OPS) were identified in Shanghai, China, by applying observation-based models and emission-based models simultaneously. By resolving these factors, the reliability of OPS estimation was improved. The contributions of different factors to OPS discrepancies were analyzed in urban and suburban settings based on differences in emission and transport characteristics.

Characteristics of ozone pollution and the sensitivity to precursors during early summer in central plain, China

Yasong Li et al.

Summary: The study conducted in Zhengzhou, China from May to June 2018 revealed that ozone pollution in the region is a regional problem influenced by precursor concentrations, high temperature, low humidity, and wind patterns. Isoprene and cis-2-butene were found to be the main contributors to O3 formation. Reduction in emissions of alkenes and NOx was suggested as an effective method to mitigate ozone pollution in Zhengzhou.

Heavy ozone pollution episodes in urban Beijing during the early summertime from 2014 to 2017: Implications for control strategy

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: In recent years, ground-level ozone has become the principal air pollutant in Beijing during summers, with concentrations and pollution days showing an increasing trend in May and June. Heavy O-3 pollution episodes were mainly caused by local photochemical formation, with VOCs playing a key role in O-3 formation.

Development of ozone reactivity scales for volatile organic compounds in a Chinese megacity

Yingnan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study developed incremental reactivity (IR) scales for 116 VOCs in a Chinese megacity, illustrating their application in calculating ozone (O3) formation potential in China. The IR scales showed a strong dependence on the chemical mechanism used, and became more sensitive to environmental conditions when NOx availability decreased. The study provides recommendations for the application of IR scales, emphasizing their significance for VOC control in China and other countries facing severe O3 air pollution.
